My dog's white fur has a dark spot. Is it a lump or discoloration?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Female | spayed | 13 lbs

My poodle has whitish fur, but there is a spot that has changed to a darker caramel color. I cannot tell is there is a lump underneath the fur. She does not lick that spot but other spots that she licks do change color. What could it be?

The color of hair can change for a number of reasons including trauma to the area resulting in scarring, excessive licking as you have noticed in other areas, hormonal changes or cyst formation. If Daisy is not bothered by the spot and it does not seem to be getting worse, you can continue to monitor it. If you notice the swelling in this area or if she's licking at it, she should be seen by a veterinarian.
