My dog is wheezing and coughing for days. What should I do next?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 1 month old | 70 lbs

My dog has been wheezing and trying to cough something up for the past two days. I tried rubbing her throat and it didn't make her cough so I don't think it's Kennel Cough, what should I do next?

Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another.

The most common disease causing cough is a viral infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics. by the way rubbing the throat will not induce coughing, only a firm pressing of the windpipe will in some cases (don't try it at home!)
