My dog has a warm, painless lump on her side. Is it serious?

Has he been licking at it? Can you identify a wound on it? It may be an abscess (localized infection) under the skin, as thise can show up very quickly. You can shave the hair over the top and clean it with dilute Betadine (available at any pharmacy - use water to dilute it so it looks like tea). Put an ecollar (cone) on him to prevent him from biting or chewing on it, and make an appointment with your vet as soon as you can—but it’s not something you need to see an emergency vet for as long as it’s not seeming painful and he’s eating and acting normally. It sounds like Cutie has a tumor or abscess on her leg. Dogs also have lymph nodes you may be feeling which are on the back of the leg behind the knee. An abscess would be hot and painful and may feel soft. A lymph node would be under the skin, firm, round and smooth. If this is a tumor they can vary in feel. Malignant tumors are irregular, attached to the deeper tissue and grow quickly. Benign growths like lipomas or fatty growths are often just below the skin, they feel round and smooth but softer than a lymph node. To find out what the lump on Cutie is she needs a veterinary exam and they can put a needle into the lump and look at the cells under a microscope. They will be able to tell if it's a fatty growth or infection. If the cells look like they could be cancer they will send the cells out for cytology, or remove the lump and send that tissue for a diagnosis. As Cutie is a young dog it's most likely a benign growth, an infection, or you are just feeling a normal lymph node under the skin. Oh no, poor Pebbles! It's certainly possible she has an abscess, but if she is intact (not spayed), then it could be a mammary tumor. Poor girl that it's painful! Because it's painful, it's best that she is seen by a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing this lump, and then can discuss treatment otiose with you. If it is an abscess, it will need to be drained and flushed sterilely, and she will need antibiotics for the infection. Should it be a mammary tumor, then there's a 50% chance it's malignant. Depending on if it has spread or not, removing it surgically may be curative.
