My husky throws up yellow liquid weekly, but acts normal. Why?

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | 2 years and 3 months old | 43 lbs

My 2 year old Siberian Husky has been throwing up yellow liquid once or twice a week for the last month or so. Other than that her behavior seems to be normal. She is eating, playing, and exercising the same. In the past she had thrown up this yellow liquid but it was less frequent, maybe 1 every 6-8 weeks. Do you know what typically causes are for this?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. There are many causes of vomiting but most commonly the cause can be directly linked to the diet or an imbalance of the gut bacteria. I typically recommend switching the diet to something different and transition over a 7-10 day period gradually reducing the old and increasing the new food until you have completely switched Mina over to 100% new food. I would recommend a food such as Science Diet or Royal Canin and use one of the salmon formulas. Allow at least 4 weeks to see if this food trial helps. After this food trial, if you are still seeing the same problem, I would recommend adding in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora, which can be found online or at your local pet store. If the vomiting continues despite the dietary change and addition of probiotic to the food, I would recommend that you have a veterinarian examine Mina so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend changing the diet and considering adding a probiotic to the diet such as Purina Fortiflora. In a recent study, it was shown that almost 55% of GI cases (vomiting / diarrhea ) were related to the diet or the intestinal bacterial content being low. I would consider switching to a different diet and wait at least 4 weeks to see a difference. The probiotic can be found online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement on the new diet, you may need to do a food trial on a hydrolyzed protein diet to rule out a dietary allergy. If the diet has been ruled out as the cause, I would recommend running Kobe's bloodwork and considering an abdominal ultrasound or x-rays. I hope this helps! Poor Medusa! Just like humans, there are many many causes of vomiting and some of the causes can be very serious. The blood in the stool is concerning for a more serious cause of illness. I recommend to have Medusa examined today by the veterinarian. Why does my dog vomit yellow bile often? What could be the cause?

Vomiting is sometimes seen with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis and chronic kidney disease, among many other conditions. Given Mugsy's young age and the fact that he is otherwise doing fine and this is sporadic, dietary indiscretion appears more likely. It may be something as easy as just changing his diet to something that he can tolerate better. However, an examination by a veterinarian as well as minimal diagnostic data would be needed to rule out more concerning things. You can start by changing his diet to a sensitive stomach type diet. If no improvement, have him examined by a veterinarian to start therapy if needed based on findings. Good luck!

For this reason, I highly recommend that you have Chewy evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as I am afraid she is likely becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and also check her hydration status and give her medications to make her feel better. Good luck!

My Siberian Husky is throwing up food and white foam, what to do?

Poor Hazel sounds like she is quite ill at the moment! If she has been vomiting for more than 24 hours, or she has vomited multiple times in an hour, then you can try a home remedy. Otherwise, you need to take her into a vet right away. Home remedy: Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, Hazel will need to see a vet right away.

My dog is throwing up yellow bile and food. What should I do now?

If your pet has vomited this much in the past 45 minutes I would be very suspicious of a foreign body or a very intense dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have). I would recommend you start supportive care (like Famotiidne 05-1.0mg/kg every 12 hrs and a bland diet like Purina EN Gastrointestinal canned food OR boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. However there is a big possibility that this could have been a toxicity and if any more symptoms start to arise (such as ataxia (staggering) or shaking, crying out) then I highly recommend you seek a personal veterinarian for a physical examination and further diagnostics. - Dr. H
