My dog threw up yellow fluid and died. What could have caused it?

From your description, it sounds as though your dog had a gastric dilitation volvulus (GDV) or 'bloat.' This is where the stomach flips upon itself. it is a life threatening condition that requires surgery in attempt to fix. Sometimes, the signs that occur when this first happens can be subtle and it goes unnoticed for some time before being treated. When the 'flip' happens, it causes a large amount of inflammation that the body must contend with and unfortunately, a good outcome doesn't always happen. It sounds like you did everything you could for your pet. Of course, it is hard to know tell what happened for sure based on your description. Since you are asking this question a year later, you may still be grieving. It may be of benefit to speak to the veterinarian who took care of Patch to discuss what happened. There are also counselors who work with grief over pet loss in your area that also may be of benefit to you.

She could have had a stomach ulcer that perforated. She may have had heart disease that caused her passing. The only way to know for sure what happened would have been to have your vet perform a necropsy (autopsy). Without doing that, all we can do is guess. Again, I am so sorry for your loss. I would recommend changing the diet and considering adding a probiotic to the diet such as Purina Fortiflora. In a recent study, it was shown that almost 55% of GI cases (vomiting / diarrhea ) were related to the diet or the intestinal bacterial content being low. I would consider switching to a different diet and wait at least 4 weeks to see a difference. The probiotic can be found online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement on the new diet, you may need to do a food trial on a hydrolyzed protein diet to rule out a dietary allergy. If the diet has been ruled out as the cause, I would recommend running Kobe's bloodwork and considering an abdominal ultrasound or x-rays. I hope this helps! Vomiting is sometimes seen with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis and chronic kidney disease, among many other conditions. Given Mugsy's young age and the fact that he is otherwise doing fine and this is sporadic, dietary indiscretion appears more likely. It may be something as easy as just changing his diet to something that he can tolerate better. However, an examination by a veterinarian as well as minimal diagnostic data would be needed to rule out more concerning things. You can start by changing his diet to a sensitive stomach type diet. If no improvement, have him examined by a veterinarian to start therapy if needed based on findings. Good luck!

Allow me to first say that I am deeply sorry for your loss. Dixie bear was taken way too early and I offer you my deepest sympathies. Unfortunately, sudden and acute deaths can happen to dogs and cats just like in human beings. Dogs that are completely normal one moment can suddenly have heart attacks or brain aneurysms, etc. that can cause them to pass away the next. Usually the three main causes of sudden death in dogs of her age are massive heart attacks, brain or cardiac aneurysms, or toxicity of some kind. And yes, all three of these diseases can cause an animal to exhibit vomiting right before they pass away. Sadly, the only true way to find out what an animal has died from it is by having a post death autopsy performed by a specialized pathologist. if this is something you’re interested in doing, please contact your veterinarian as to whether or not they can refer you to someone that could help determine the cause of death. Sounds like she had acute liver failure. I'm so sorry this happened. Unfortunately, liver failure can have any number of possible causes. Without a necropsy (autopsy) with histopathology of the tissues you will probably never know exactly what happened. These are very general signs that could have happened due to many different conditions such as ones affecting the heart or it could have possibly been due to internal bleeding.
