Why did my dog throw up during a thunderstorm? Is it anxiety?

Poor San! He could have vomited due to a GI illness, eating something rotten, a sudden change in diet, being given food he's never had before, intestinal worms, a foreign body, or pancreatitis. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Diarrhea and throwing up can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Max for 12 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to his regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if he gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

The color of the vomit could be caused by some blood (e.g. an injury in the esophagus) or coloring of the food he ate or severe inflammation somewhere in the gastrointestinal tract. I am very sorry to hear that Max is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potentiall causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few hours I would continue to monitor Max at home. The foamy clear vomit you noticed is most likely the final contents of Max's now empty stomach; bike and stomach acids. It's not anything to be worried about. . Rest Max's gastrointestinal tract by holding back food for 12 hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. If Max does not improve, has sever vomiting or diarrhoea, you notice fresh blood, Max seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian.
