My dog isn't eating, vomiting rubber bands. Is it an emergency?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 9 months old | 65 lbs

My lab has not eaten or pooped for one week. She drinks water. Every time she eats she throws it all up. She’s been throwing up lots of rubber bands.

Hello, sorry to hear about Holly. It sounds like Holly may have some rubber bands stuck in her stomach that are causing an obstruction. She will need to be seen by a veterinarian and have x-rays taken. If confirmed that she has an obstruction, the most likely next step is that she will need surgery to remove these rubber bands.

Holly must feel really sick since this has been going on for a week. Have her evaluated today to prevent any further damage to her GI tract. Rubber banks may cause intestines to become piled and this can lead to multiple complications.

Do not offer her food until she is evaluated by your veterinarian. If your veterinarian cannot see Holly today, you should bring her to another veterinarian or emergency clinic today. Hope this helps and best of luck.

If this occurs, this is a surgical emergency, which can cost several thousand dollars. There is a chance he could pass the rubber bands in his feces, but I do not believe it is worth the risk. My cat ate a rubber band and is still throwing up. What to do?

I am sorry to hear about Ruby. With a history of ingesting foreign objects in a kitty who is still vomiting then I would highly recommend a visit to her vet for an exam and x-ray. While she did vomit a piece of rubberband, we don't know if there is more of it in her intestinal tract causing problems or if she ate something else entirely. I would get her in to see her vet right away, because if she does have an obstruction, delaying treatment can cause further complications/risks. Best of luck!

My dog ate a rubber toy piece. Is it an emergency after vet hours?

The only thing you should do right now is to monitor her for any signs of an obstruction which includes: excessive vomiting (especially water), decreased appetite, lethargy and little to no stool production. This sounds like something that should pass through with no problems, but just keep an eye on here tonight and definitely get her seen by a vet tomorrow if she develops any concerning symptoms. You can also try feeding her a piece of bread 1-2 times a day to help bind up the rubber and help facilitate its passage through her GI tract. Cat vomiting foam, panting, and ate rubber band. Vet emergency?

Since your cat has a history of ingesting a foreign body and has been vomiting so frequently I would be concerned. I would recommend taking him in to the vet to be examined and have X-rays performed to rule out a potential intestinal blockage. If a blockage is present emergency surgery may be needed. It is possible that she has an intestinal obstruction or blockage from eating parts of her blanket. This is usually diagnosed with x-rays of the abdomen, and an intestinal obstruction is a surgical emergency. If he absolutely cannot get her to a veterinarian until 7am, I recommend not feeding her any food in the meantime. She can have access to water, however she may vomit this up. You need to take Hank into a vet right away. It's quite serious he hasn't eating for three days and is vomiting. He could have a severe GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, or could have a foreign body. He needs veterinary care immediately to diagnose what is causing these symptoms so he can be treated.
