Dog exposed to parvo, now vomiting. Is it parvo or just car sick?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the food was thrown up mostly undigested this is likely more regurgitation. My suspicion is this is probably more just from car sickness. If Nittany is acting otherwise normal then I would suggest feeding her a small bland meal (boiled chicken and sweet potato) later today and then resuming her normal diet tomorrow. Dogs with parvo usually have both vomiting and severe diarrhea so I think it's unlikely this is what is going on with Nittany. However, if her vomiting persists or diarrhea, lethargy or inappetance develops then you should schedule a visit with a veterinarian.

Poor little puppy! I can give you a home remedy for Honey to see if that helps, as well as some things to look out for in terms of symptoms of parvo. Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, she has blood in her feces, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Poor Daisy! If she's vomiting, acting lethargic, and not wanting to eat or drink much, this is quite serious and she needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. I would recommend taking her in today for an exam. She may have an illness like parvo at this point, even if she tested negative recently - or she may have some other problem causing her current symptoms. Regardless of the underlying cause, these symptoms can be life-threatening in a puppy this age, so she needs veterinary care right away.

Vomiting and diarrhea have many causes including intestinal worms, inflammation, infection, dietary problems (including dietary indiscretion or eating things pets are not supposed to eat, food sensitivities/allergies), ingestion of foreign bodies or exposure to toxins, bacterial overgrowth in the gut, problems in the stomach, intestines, or even problems outside of the intestinal tract/stomach including pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, metabolic disease (diabetes,etc), endocrine diseases (thyroid or other hormone problems), etc. Usually, in puppies, we worry about intestinal parasites, infection (parvo/coronavirus), foreign body ingestion or dietary indiscretion. A thorough history and physical exam with resultant diagnostics such as fecal tests, blood tests, imaging studies such as x-rays/ultrasound can be done to try to determine what is going on. Puppies should be dewormed starting at 2 weeks of age and then every 2-3 weeks. This should be done multiple times and should continue for 3-4 times after weaning. When puppies nurse, they continue to get infected with intestinal parasites from their mother. Good luck

I'm sorry Butters isn't doing well! Unfortunately your post was cut off, but I'm assuming you meant to say that she is fully vaccinated? If the dog she was around was fully vaccinated and she is fully vaccinated, then it would be very rare for her to get parvo. I will give you a home remedy to try to see if it helps her vomiting, which could be caused by a GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or pancreatitis. It could even be related to her normal food Blue Buffalo. Many of my colleagues have seen GI problems in dogs who are fed BB, and it's is not a well regarded food in the veterinary community. It's not a food I would ever recommend for many reasons, include the high incidence of GI issues including hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, as well as zero quality control (they don't own their own factories), and the fact they have openly admitted they have lied about their ingredients. If you were interested in switching food, brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Dogs actually do need grains in their diet, and many studies have shown the grain free food is fad. Anyway, the home remedy I'm going to give you a home remedy that includes withholding food and feeding only a bland diet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If she's stopped having diarrhea, this is a good sign. I hope that she has some medication on board for nausea and vomiting - if not, your vet should be able to prescribe some for you to give at home. Normally, with parvo, the best sign of recovery is when they have gone 24 hours without any vomiting and are eating on their own - until then, you need to continue treatment with fluids and other supportive care.
