My dog's shedding, skin grey, chewing, vomiting after flea meds?

Vomiting and inappetence can be observed with conditions such as gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction, among other possibilities. She may be having side effects to the medications administered. Hair loss and scratching are likely due to allergies. For this reason, I highly recommend that you have Shelby evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as I am afraid she is likely becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and also check her hydration status and give her medications to make her feel better. Good luck!

Hi, and thanks for your question. Although pic would help to determine the underlying cause, this is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). If you don't care for that vet, find another. I think the vomiting and hair loss/itching are unrelated. For vomiting, common causes would include dietary intolerance or indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. She likely needs blood work and/or x-rays to see what could be causing it. For the hair loss and itching, the most common causes would be a combination of fleas, flea allergies, and food allergies. Clementine should be on a monthly flea preventative, and may need a special diet once the vomiting is resolved.

Ouch! Dixie's skin certainly looks uncomfortable. Some dogs are allergic to fleas, whereby just a bite or two can make them extremely itchy, which can lead to skin infections and irritation. The most commonly affected skin sites are around the head/neck and tail base/back of the hind legs. The thickened appearance of Daisy's skin is likely due to chronic skin irritation and inflammation. Other possible causes of these skin changes include allergies to food or the environment, ringworm, mange or endocrine diseases (such as hypothyroidism). The excessive shedding that you have noticed from both dogs could be a normal seasonal occurrence or due the stress of moving to a new home. At this point, Dixie should be examined by a vet to establish the cause of these issues so that they can be treated with any necessary medications (such as antibiotics, antifungals, medicated shampoo, etc.). The vet will need to perform skin scrapings to look for mites microscopically and will need to perform a Wood's lamp and possible fungal culture to rule out ringworm. Ringworm and sarcoptic mange (scabies) can be transmitted to other animals and humans, so these possibilities should be ruled out with diagnostic tests. In the meantime, discontinue the use of hydrogen peroxide and apple cider vinegar. Both of these can cause additional irritation and the hydrogen peroxide in particular can delay healing of the skin. Assure that both dogs receive a high quality flea preventative (such as Nexgard, Bravecto or Advantix) regularly. I hope that all goes well!

Hi. Sorry honey isn't feeling well. Being lethargic, quiet, and vomiting can occur for alot of different diseases or conditions. It can be from a dietary indiscretion, a food sensitivity, a GI infection,  pancreatitis, metabolic and endocrine conditions, foreign bodies in the intestines, and more.   The best thing for vomiting would be to get him seen and try to get to the bottom of the cause.  But he will need an exam and some diagnostics.  In the meantime, you can try a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice for 3-5 days, then slowly change back to her regular diet if doing well. The hair loss can be caused by bacterial infections, allergies, metabolic, or endocrine diseases. Your veterinarian may do some bloodwork to check for those conditions and also some skin testing. Good luck.

I'm sorry Cooper is having trouble with itching! I'm not sure how long ago you placed the flea medication on him, but if he wasn't up to date on it before, it still could be a problem with the fleas causing his symptoms. Should he have had a heavy burden of fleas, he could have developed a flea allergy causing this shedding and itching. In addition, when a dog has fleas, the environment needs to be disinfected as well to get rid of all the fleas. Allergies can develop suddenly in dogs, and while a food allergy may be possible, it's not a very common type of allergy in dogs. The majority of dogs with allergies have an environmental allergy, so that could also be a possible cause of his shedding and itching. I recommend taking Cooper into a vet today for an exam. The vet can diagnose what is causing his symptoms, and can treat him for it. Good luck!

The hair loss pattern is suggestive of flea dermatitis, so I'm wondering if you've seen fleas any time recently before giving flea medication. If not, it's possible that Minnie has food or environmental allergies or a different kind of external parasites. I'd recommend having a vet examine her to determine what might be going on.
