My pit bull is vomiting blood. Should I use a bland diet or see a vet?

He might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this. withhold food for 12 hours then offer Canelo boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If he continues vomiting or is not eating, take him to the vet to get treatment.

Poor Lightening. He could have parvo, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, may have eaten something rotten or toxic, or could have a foreign body. His symptoms are a medical emergency, and cannot be treated at home. Please take him into a vet immediately.

I'm sorry to hear that Loin isn't feeling well. Vomiting and diarrhea in a young dog can be caused by a variety of conditions, but the most common include parvovirus (unlikely if he has been fully vaccinated), gastroenteritis (stomach upset) from eating different foods, table scraps or treats, intestinal parasites, or another GI virus. Since his diarrhea looks quite liquid with possible blood in it (difficult to tell from the picture), I recommend taking Loin to his vet for evaluation. The vet will be able to run a test for parvovirus, stool sample to check for parasites, and any other indicated testing to get to the bottom of this issue. If Loin is dehydrated, he may need IV fluids. Until you can get to the vet, withhold food for 12-24 hours. After that time, talk to Loin's vet about starting him on a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days before gradually transitioning back to his normal dog food over another 5-7 days. I recommend that you have Layka evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. You can offer a bland diet which may help. This diet could be composed of rice, boiled chicken, ham, turkey, lean hamburgers or low fat cottage cheese. It could be caused by her food, especially if you recently changed the diet. It could also be caused by an infection, parasite, obstruction, gastritis/enteritis, pancreatitis, metabolic/endocrine disease, etc. If she is otherwise acting completely normal, you could withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet, like chicken breast and white rice. If the vomiting continues or she becomes lethargic than she needs to be seen by your vet to determine the cause and treat the problem. Your vet can run lab-work and take an x-ray, if needed, to help diagnose and then prescribe medications. She may need an anti-vomiting medication, antacid, and/or an gastrointestinal protectant to help treat.

If you have recently switched his food or added in a new treat it could be dietary indiscretion causing this. If this were the case, I would withhold food for 12 hours and introduce a bland diet as outlined below. If, however, there has been no recent switch to his food and he has been on the same thing his whole life this is likely something else. My recommendation would be to have a veterinarian take a look at him and run some testing such as blood work to see if there are any concerning changes that need to be addressed. If you are concerned about money, then you can start the bland diet as outlined below but if the vomiting and lethargy persist for more than 24 hours I would strongly recommend he be seen by a vet. It is low in fiber, fat and protein and is high in carbohydrates. Bland diets are generally composed of a single carbohydrate source and a single lean protein source. The most common bland diet is boiled rice and boiled lean chicken breast, without skin and bones. Since bland diets are low in fiber, stool production slows and defecation is less frequent. Bland diets are fed to rest the gastric system and to help promote normal stool formation. Animals that are physically sick should not be fed bland diets as a method of treatment. PRIOR TO FEEDING A BLAND DIET Pets should be fasted for 12 to 24 hours. Young animals should not be fasted for more than 12 hours. Fasting will allow the intestinal system to relax and minimize acid secretions that may irritate and inflame the intestinal lining. During the fast small amounts of water or ice chips may be provided. Never fast a sick animal, it may cause disease progression and death. BASIC BOILED RICE AND CHICKEN BLAND DIET RECIPE CARBOHYDRATE SOURCE: Boiled white rice LEAN PROTEIN SOURCE: Chicken breast, no skin and bones BOILED RICE: 1 part white rice with 3 parts water boiled for 20 – 25 minutes or until the rice is easily crushed. Smaller animals will require less and larger animals will require more adhering to the same carbohydrate to lean protein source ratio. The bland diet should be fed for 4 -5 days with no treats or other food sources until stools are firm.

As a general approach, in case the cause is dietary related, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours.
