Senior Yorkie picky, vomiting bile, hard stools. Is it pancreatitis?

You can start with a CBC and chemistry panel. This will show any infection and check the red counts. IF there is a stomach ulcer, then sometimes an anemia will show. The chemistry panel will check liver, kidney and blood sugar and check the protein levels. Certain changes in these values can indication a GI problem or ulcers. From there, an ultrasound will be your best tool as this can look at the stomach and intestines to evaluate their thickness and check for any abnormalities to get you more answers.

Pancreatic lipase can be falsely positive in case of gastrointestinal problems of different nature than pancreatitis. If the levels are elevated with a snap test you should ideally ask for a quantitative test (which gives you a specific number and it is more reliable to evaluate). My questions would be: why she was tested the first time? what were the signs? and was an ultrasound performed at all? What kind of liver damage she had? No, the stress of the trip to the vet cannot raise CPLI levels. Hello. I am sorry that Daizee isn't feeling well. If she is vomiting and having diarrhoea, and bloodwork and radiographs were normal, this typically means she either has gastritis or pancreatitis. Both of these conditions would result in normal blood and x-rays, but cause the diseases that you are seeing. Often-times these animals need to be in hospital, on IV fluids and stronger pain meds then can be sent home. They often also need multiple medications to protect the gut, and if she is vomiting she can only get these by IV, which means she needs to be in hospital. I would recommend a visit to a 24 hour or emergency clinic if your clinic isn't open, or go back to your vet and discuss if Daizee needs IV fluids and IV medications. Good luck with Daizee!

It is an inflammation of the pancreas that is typically characterized by vomiting and/or diarrhea. It would be worth having him rechecked and possibly tested for this disease if he does not improve. Of course, there can be other causes for his symptoms. Fecal testing may be warranted to rule out a bacterial or parasitic infection. I hope this information helps!

Hello. I am so sorry that Bailey is so sick. The next step is to ultrasound her abdomen. This will show problems like thickened intestines that can not be seen on an x-ray. If something concerning is seen, sometimes a diagnosis can be made just by looking at the ultrasound, but sometimes a biopsy may be required. At his age Diarrhea can be a sign of a serious condition rather than a simple gastrointestinal upset, i would strongly advice taking him to the vet for a full checkup including blood test to get a full health assessment.

It sounds like it may inflammatory bowel disease but he would need biopsies of his GI tract to diagnose. You could try a hypoallergenic diet like science diet z/d ultra and talk to your vet about low dose steroids (budesonide is a good choice for GI issues) if you haven't tried this already. Also I would have him dewormed with a broad spectrum dewormer if you haven't already. I have had good success with this regimen in some of my IBD patients. It sounds like y'all have ruled out everything else. I hope this helps! if this doesn't work then I think intestinal biopsies are the next step.
