My spayed dog has a vaginal gash. What should I do immediately?

Depending on the severity of the cut you can either treat it at home with a local antiseptic cream or take her to the vet to get it treated, i would need to see a picture in order to tell you if this can be treated at home or not.

While this cannot be sutured back in place for now as it is infected and inflamed, the ultimate goal would be to treat this wound aggressively and it can improve. This is not something that can be treated at home. This will require surgical debridement, cleaning and antibiotics. This is also painful and pain control medications need to be considered as well. This looks like a reaction to the stitches that were used under the skin from the spay surgery. There is a type of suture that your vet may have used that takes months and months to completely dissolve. That is my best guess as to what is going on. I don't think you need to rush her to an ER but I do think you need to get her an exam with your vet sometime in the next 24 hours. Try to keep her as calm and quiet as possible in the meantime. Watch it carefully, if it starts to look swollen she needs to see an ER vet.

Hello, and thank you for your question. It looks like Sydney's incision is still mostly apposed. I would keep her very quiet for the next week, and keep an e-collar on her at all times. With strict rest, the small gap may start to scab up and start healing on its own. Over the next few days, if you notice any further redness, swelling or discharge, I would take her back to the vet to see if she may need a few stitches or tissue glue to re-appose the edges again. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should clean the wound with cotton buds and warm, boiled water 2-3 times a day until you see your vet. Putting a cone back on is an excellent idea too. Your vet will likely prescribe Apollyon an antibiotic cream and maybe will put a stitch or two to close the small opening in the wound.

Thank you for providing a picture of Honey's incision, it's very helpful. Yes, I agree it does appear to have opened up, and I'm worried it could get infected since it has opened. She needs to see a vet asap to get this closed, and the vet may likely close it with surgical glue after examining it and cleaning it. The vet may also prescribe antibiotics. The wound appears very superficial in the picture and I would leave it open to the air without dressing. Manuka honey and saline washes once daily may help if it becomes crusted. It is possibly due to a reaction to suture material which although rare can occur (surgical repair is a last resort as healing can be slow!)
