My dog has a URI and won't stop coughing. What else helps her cough?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 13 days old | 5.8 lbs

I took my 9 month old female corgi to emergency vet last night and they diagnosed her with upper respiratory infection and prescribed antibiotocs. Per doctor's instructions I gave her benadryl (one 25mg tablet, shes 25 lbs) because she wouldnt stop coughing and couldnt sleep. It took 20 mins to start working and she was cough free for about 1.5 hrs. Then started coughing again although not as frequent. Is there anything else I can do to help with her cough besides a humidifier

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I recommend giving the Benadryl as frequently as your veterinarian has instructed you can give it - typically every 6-8 hours. Coco's cough will likely not resolve for at least 3-5 days with the antibiotic medication, because this needs time to work and relieve the infection. I hope this is helpful!
