My dog's tummy is upset from food change. Is Pure Balance healthy?

I'm sorry to hear that Cleo is not doing well. If she improved on a bland diet (chicken and rice), but the signs have returned on her regular food, then I would be suspicious that the food is the cause of the problems. I would recommend resuming the chicken and rice diet to make sure that the signs again resolve with a bland diet. If that is the case, then I would recommend consulting with your veterinarian for a recommendation for food based on what you were previously feeding (brand and protein source), how large the bag was and how long the bag has been open. It may be that Cleo does not do well on that particular brand or flavor of food, it may be a bad bag, or it may have been open too long and started to spoil. Depending on which of these things is most likely, your vet will be able to give you a recommendation on what to try, but I would recommend sticking with chicken and rice for now to make sure that she is back to normal before you make any other changes. If Sadie has gastrointestinal signs, like vomiting, nausea, loose stools, gurgling abdomen, abdominal distension or abdominal pain, you should change her diet to a different one. There are good quality diets for dogs with sensitive stomach and skin problems on the market (for example Purina, Eukanuba, Royal Canin). It is better the change the diet slowly, as abrupt change is likely to produce more serious gastrointestinal problems. Please, mix Sadie's current food with a new diet for a few days slowly increasing the amount of new food and decreasing her old diet. After 4-5 days of doing this it should be safe to stop her Hill's food completely.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Usually we recommend a switch to a new food slowly to avoid the signs that you are seeing now (diarrhea, upset stomach, etc.). If you are already seeing these signs then there is no point on a slow switch. I would suggest switching over to the new food now. Be prepared for more diarrhea/upset stomach however, and if you can go buy some boneless skinless chicken breasts and rice, and boil BOTH of these, and feed this for a few days once you get it, it might help. Then mix in the new food slowly. In the mean-time though, just switch to the new food. Best of luck with Aspen!

Unfortunately, it is quite common for some dogs to experience GI upset ([vomiting](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/vomiting-1/) or [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/)) when switching food. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours. Resume feeding a bland diet (boiled boneless/skinless chicken breast mixed with plain cooked white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount as long as she doesn't vomit. Feed the bland diet until the stool is consistently normal (usually several days), then transition slowly to the new diet over another 5-7 days. [Veterinary probiotics](https://www.petcoach.co/article/probiotics-and-prebiotics-bacteria-aren-t-all-bad) may be considered to promote gut health. If she continues to vomit and have diarrhea, or develops lethargy, loss of appetite, or abdominal pain in spite of a bland diet, she will need to see a vet as soon as possible.

Yes, you should have transitioned her slowly over a few days from the rice and chicken to the new food. So start all over again: Fast Meisha again for 12 hours, then feed bland food such as boiled rice with boiled boneless white chicken meat in small quantities over several feeds a day,. Do this for a day, then start replacing small quantities of rice with her Blackhawk food over the next two days until she is at the normal quantity of her regular food. If the diarrhea does not go away by the end of the third day, or your Meisha is lethargic and dehydrated,you will need to take her to a veterinarian for an exam.

Thank you for posting the food! I can certainly understand being concerned about this food, it is not a good quality food in my opinion. And from your previous post, it does sound like it was upsetting her stomach. I would consider switching her to a different food slowly. You can give her a high quality food like I mentioned previous, such as Royal Canin or Hills Science diet, but other good quality foods include Iams and Purina Pro Plan. To switch food, you mix the new food and old food together, gradually increasing the amount of the new food and decreasing the amount of the old food until your puppy is eating the new food only. This help prevents GI upset.
