My dog is too tired on Trazodone and won't eat. Adjust dose?

Hi there. I would be concerned with Hershey developing serotonin syndrome with concurrent use of trazadone and fluoxetine especially if you are giving them together often. It has to do with how the drugs are metabolized in the body and what receptors they work on. Side effects can be as you have listed, as with diarrhea, labored fast breathing, etc. I would try calling your doctor to discuss changing the dosages or weaning off the trazadone altogether. The dose for a 20lb puppy would be approximately 25mg every 12 hours with a max dose of 50mg. 100mg would be too high of a dose but would likely not cause significant problems. A dog with too high of a dose of Trazodone may exhibit sedation, lethargy and incoordination when walking. I hope this helps answer your question. Serotonin syndrome is certainly possible with fluoxetine and trazodone together, or even just fluoxetine by itself, but what you're seeing with Luna does not sound like serotonin syndrome. With serotonin syndrome there's just too much of everything, too much energy, too much vomiting, too much diarrhea, too much muscle movement (tremors and seizures), too much pupil size. Sedation is an expected and desirable side effect of Trazodone, so in this situation I wouldn't worry. I would recommend giving a slightly smaller dose of trazodone tomorrow to see if that is enough to keep Luna calm. And always, if you're worrying about it and not sure, take Luna to an emergency clinic for an quick check in. Also, these two drugs are used together VERY commonly in veterinary medicine, but I don't think human doctors use them together, so you'll see lots of precautions against it while reading online. Yes, Trazodone is an anti-anxiety medication used in dogs pretty regularly. There are also other anti-anxiety medications that can be used if Trazodone does not seem to help Precious's unique situation, so keep the lines of communication open. I hope that this works however. While it's possible that this was related to the trazodone causing sedation, this is a relatively low dose for a dog her size and I would think you would have seen signs sooner. It is possible that she had some hip pain. Other causes of uncoordinated movement would include a neurologic problem like a seizure, or certain toxins. If she seems to be her normal self again I think it would be safe to try another dose of trazodone during the day when you can monitor closely (check with your vet first). If she is still not walking normally or seems painful I'd recommend having her examined by your vet.

We actually often prescribe it just for this purpose - to keep dogs calm and quiet post-operatively. It is really best for her to be as inactive as possible for at least the next 7-10 days. Go ahead and give her the Trazodone tonight and then call your vet and consult with them tomorrow about how to proceed. Trazodone has a wide dosage range, so it's certainly possible that you may have room to safely increase Cupid's dose - however, you should never make any changes to the dosage of a prescription medication without talking to the veterinarian who prescribed it. So I would suggest calling Cupid's regular veterinarian to talk about your concerns. He/she may recommend increasing the trazodone dose, or may suggest switching to a different medication altogether such as gabapentin or Sileo. A training plan to help Cupid learn to stand calmly for grooming would also be helpful, since there's only so much that we can accomplish with medication alone.
