Dog had a tick for a short time. Is disease transmission likely?

Given that the tick is not engorged, it did not feed her on, so no disease would have been transmitted. The tick needs to bite and feed to pass along disease into her bloodstream. Ticks can certainly be a problem and transmit a number of diseases including Lyme disease and others. Ticks transmit diseases by attaching to the skin and need to remain attached for a period of time to transmit disease. You do not need to worry about the tick that fell off any more than other ticks, but if you have seen other ticks on Laser, then you should look into prevention options. For most tick borne diseases, it takes at least 12 hours for the tick to start transmitting the disease and it must remain attached for 48 hours before it can fully transmit the disease. If you are unsure how long the tick was attached then you should go by your vet's recommendation. They know what diseases are prevalent in your area.

You are not likely to see Lyme disease in this case. The tick must be attached to the dog for at least 48 hours to transmit Lyme. It is more likely he is just sore - maybe a muscle strain. If he doesn't seem better in another 5 days or so then you should have your vet check him out to be on the safe side.

A tick must be attached and actively feeding for at least 24 hours before the Lyme organism can be transmitted. If the tick was not engorged, it has not yet fed. Monitor for lameness, lethargy, painful joints, fever or loss of appetite. You can present the tick to your vet for identification if you still have it. Consider a topical preventative, collar or oral preventative to prevent fleas and ticks. Discuss options with your veterinarian.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is no need to take him to the vet due to the ticks. Be sure to get him in to the vet soon though for vaccines, start heart worm and flea/tick medications and to have him dewormed. Bring a stool sample. If he hasn’t had any vaccines yet he should be seen next week. If he has received his first vaccines (DHPP) the he needs it boosted 3-4weeks later. Good luck!
