My dog's tick removal failed, part broke off. What should I do?

Great job finding and removing the tick. The yellow material you saw as you squished the tick is likely some of the ticks internal structure/anatomy as well as the digested meal. I would just clean the site on Kona where you removed the tick with warm water and soap and monitor at this point like you said. There may be a small bump or scab or a little redness at the site where the tick attached, and this should resolve in the next 10-14 days. Lyme disease as well as other tick borne disease can cause lethargy, fevers, and joint pain. There are several tick preventative medications you can consider to prevent future ticks. Examples are Nexgard and Simparica (which are monthly oral medications) and collars such as the Preventic collar or Seresto collar.

It's difficult to tell the extent of the injury (the photo is quite blurry), but the wound appears rather deep. Here are my recommendation: 1) Clip the hair around the area and expose all of the lesions. 2) Flush the wound with clean water a syringe using high pressure. Use a clean cloth to gently wipe away the scabs. Do not scrub, because it will irritate the skin more. It's OK if all of the scabs do not come off in each washing. Do not use any antiseptics like iodine, because this can be irritating and delay healing. 3) Apply an antibacterial cream to the wound and lightly bandage the wound. You should start seeing good results within a week after starting this. It may take a few weeks before it's completely healed. It depends on the brand of collar, as I find most of them to be pretty poor. The only one I really like is Seresto. But if you are still finding ticks, I'd say this isn't working. I recommend a spot on treatment like Revolution, it's excellent. I hope this helps!

As long as the area on Miley's skin looks okay (no significant redness or swelling), then you don't need to take her to the vet right away after finding an attached tick. If the tick was attached for long enough to transmit disease, like Lyme disease, Ehrlichia or Anaplasma, then it takes about 6 months for a blood test to diagnose an infection. Unfortunately, there are no measures to take to stop any of these diseases if she's already been infected. I would certainly mention this tick attachment to Miley's vet the next time she goes in for an exam because her vet will most likely recommend running a tick-borne disease blood test about 6 months from the date of tick exposure. In the long run, definitely add some tick prevention in for Miley. Seresto collars, K9 Advantix II, Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica or Credelio are all great options to discuss with your vet. Ticks can transmit disease that can cause a fever and joint pain. They can also cause a lot of inflammation and an infection from just the attachment site and the bite itself. I would recommend getting her seen by a vet since it is getting larger to see if it is infected and needs antibiotics
