My puppy has tick fever, diarrhea, vomiting, won't eat. What's wrong?

Vomiting and diarrhea have many causes including intestinal worms, inflammation, infection, dietary problems (including dietary indiscretion or eating things pets are not supposed to eat, food sensitivities/allergies), ingestion of foreign bodies or exposure to toxins, bacterial overgrowth in the gut, problems in the stomach, intestines, or even problems outside of the intestinal tract/stomach including pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, metabolic disease (diabetes,etc), endocrine diseases (thyroid or other hormone problems), etc. Usually, in puppies, we worry about intestinal parasites, infection (parvo/coronavirus), foreign body ingestion or dietary indiscretion. A thorough history and physical exam with resultant diagnostics such as fecal tests, blood tests, imaging studies such as x-rays/ultrasound can be done to try to determine what is going on. Puppies should be dewormed starting at 2 weeks of age and then every 2-3 weeks. This should be done multiple times and should continue for 3-4 times after weaning. When puppies nurse, they continue to get infected with intestinal parasites from their mother. Good luck

I am so sorry to hear that Coco is sick. At 8 weeks old my biggest concerns would be parvovirus, intestinal parasites, and something called intussusception. This is where the intestine telescopes on itself and causes a functional obstruction. I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment or seek a second opinion. An 8 week old puppy will become dehydrated and decompensate quickly without supportive care. IV fluids, anti nausea medications and anti diarrhea meds would be a good plan while the diagnostics are Being run to identify the problem such as fecal Exams, parvo test, CBC, And probably repeat x-rays. Poor guy. I highly suspect that Ghost may have a tick borne disease that was transmitted when the ticks were feeding on him. I would highly recommend taking him back to your vet for a tick titer test to check for these diseases and also get him started on antibiotics (i.e. Doxycycline is the antibiotic of choice for tick related diseases) right away! If he is still not able to recover well wthin 24 hrs of starting the antibiotics, then you should consider having him hospitalized with IV fluids and around the clock care. His condiiton is not good and I would err on the side of caution. I am so sorry that Ghost is so ill, and I sincerlely hope he is able to make a full and speedy recovery soon. Hello. I am so sorry that your puppy is so sick. The medications she is receiving are fine, but really need to be administered in a hospital situation, But I can understand the constraints & difficulties you have with veterinary care in your country. Lousie may have parvo or distemper, diseases that are difficult to treat even under the best circumstances. I would at least try to keep her confined so that she only has access to clean water. You can try giving her chicken or beef broths or stocks, too. All we can do with these very young patients is to hospitalize & administer the proper treatments. Hi there! Sorry to hear that Felicia is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Felicia evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. I would proceed with an evaluation as soon as possible as I am afraid that she is getting weaker. At the very least they can address dehydration if present and start her on anti-diarrhea medications. Hello and thank you for reaching out to our consultation service. although it is possible to get diarrhea from a tick related disease, it is not common at all. it would be more likely that she has either eaten something that is not agreeing with her or she has a disease or condition unrelated to the tick. If she continues to eat and drink normally as well as wants to play, I would wait for 48 to 72 hours with feeding her regular diet. If after the 72 hours, the diarrhea is still present, she needs to be seen by a veterinarian. If at any point, she starts to act lethargic or vomit, etc., I would take her to the veterinarian as soon as possible so that they can do a physical examination and possibly some diagnostic testing. Hello. The most concerning symptom here is the pale tongue. This could indicate anemia, a potentially life threatening condition. Vomiting & diarrhea are also symptoms of many things, so along with the anemia, you really need to have Coco evaluated by a veterinarian. I know this might be challenging in these times, but please try to find a clinic that is still open, or at least will talk to you by telephone or skype.
