Why is my dog having throat spasms and swallowing a lump after eating?

Based on what you are describing and the location of the lump I would be concerned that your dog has either enlarged lymph nodes (either from infection or cancer) or an abscess. Since your dog has these symptoms and is lethargic as well I would be concerned about a systemic illness. This type of injury where you have vocalization, limping, and swelling definitely needs to be looked at by your veterinarian. A thorough physical exam of the area and potentially radiographs of the bones are needed here to provide the care that Stormy needs after an injury to this degree. I would highly recommend taking him in to be seen as soon as you can. You are not going to be able to care for an injury like this at home. For tonight, its best to just keep Stormy quiet in an isolated room without any other pets to disturb him and apply a cold compress to the swollen area, if tolerated, for about 3-5 mins. Using a bag of peas will suffice. I do hope that you are able to get Stormy some medical attention soon. Best of luck and take care.

There are many possibilities, an absess, blocked salivary gland, insect bite or injury would be the most common causes for rapid swelling. The reduced appetite is a concern, this may be due to discomfort, narrowing of the throat or fever. If this persist or increases overnight he should be checked by your vet, monitor for any changes to his breathing which would require an emergency visit

The most common reason for the swelling under his jaw are enlarged lymph nodes. With the increased thirst and swelling under his neck I am concerned he has a cancer called Lymphoma. He will need a physical exam and blood work. The most common cause of increased thirst with lymphoma is an increased calcium. Other causes for the swelling under his neck could be an allergic reaction, swollen salivary glands or lymph nodes that are swollen from something else other than cancer (reactive to something in his mouth or ears). The facial dropping sounds neurologic. 2 weeks is a long time to not eat. I would call tuesday when your Vet opens to get an appointment. If there are lumps on his throat and he is having upper respiratory symptoms, I would recommend having x-rays of his upper airway done to see if there is any compression or deviation of the airway due to one of the lumps. He may also be dealing with allergies, in which case you can try an antihistamine. Most people use 1mg per 1lb of body weight every 12 hours for Benadryl. The vet can also insert a small needle into the masses and examine them under a microscope for a better understanding of what the lumps might be. I hope this helps! It could be an abscess, an enlarged lymph node, or an enlarged salivary gland. If she is acting ok then it is probably fine to wait a few days, but I recommend you have her seen this week or as soon as she starts acting abnormal. Good luck!

Lethargy, trouble walking, not eating/pooping are all signs of weakness and being generally unwell. This can be due to many causes however for a dog that is 2 years old I would be concerned about things such as fungal disease, parasite disease, heartworm, Addison's disease, or sometimes it can be more simple like an abscess. The wheezing is concerning that he has trouble in his lungs or heart, so heartworm is a concern. The squishy lump could be an abscess (pus filled pocket) and this could cause all the signs you are seeing as well. Either way, I recommend you get him to a vet right away, even a simple thing such as an abscess, which is fixed fairly easily, can be fatal if not treated in time. Best of luck with Champ!
