Why is my dog still thin after deworming? Could it be coccidia?

Puppies tend to go through a lanky phase especially if they're a taller breed. Typically they will grow taller before they start to fill out and grow muscle mass. It sounds like your kid is still young and otherwise very happy, so I would give it some time if she was dewormed appropriately. If you're feeding once a day it might be best to consider twice a day feeding as well, like 2 cups twice a day instead of 3 cups once a day. It's very hard to overfeed puppies as they are actively growing. So if you feel like she is not gaining weight appropriately you can try adding an additional 1/2 cup at a time and reassessing in a week or two. Also most veterinary clinics will be fine with you bringing your pet in just to use the scale, just call ahead to ask. This would be a good way for you to know about weight gain. Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to check for intestinal parasites. Puppies frequently require multiple dewormings spaced 2-3 weeks apart to clear infection. A physical exam may diagnose may other conditions.If they are healthy, they can begin their vaccine protocol within the next week. In the meantime, they should be eating or transitioning to a high quality puppy food. This will put weight on them and aid in proper development.

He definitely looks very thin. The biggest concern with a dog that eats well, but doesn't gain weight is that he has a disease or heavy parasite burden. There are some inherited diseases like liver shunts that can cause them to be unthrifty like this and there are some acquired infections like Babesiosis that can also cause them to look like this. The only way to know is to have him evaluated by a veterinarian. I recommend taking him soon, because he doesn't look like he has much left to lose. I would recommend a really good deworming since he is young. However it would be best to take a fecal to the vet to determine if he has parasites and if so what kind. If he does not have any parasites I would recommend a food change. I would try a basic diet like purina, royal canine, or science diet puppy food.

As for food, brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I feed my dogs Iams, and they love it. Some pets may need multiple deworming to get rid of all the worms. You must also make sure you have the correct type of dewormer. Some worms are not able to be seen with the naked eye. If Nala has not had her stool examined under a microscope by the veterinarian, I recommend to have this done as it is the most accurate method. You are correct this could be due to the increase in exercise. If Tech is eating the same, but exercising a lot more than before, then I would look into increasing the amount of food he receives. In order to best know how much he would need, I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can weigh him, and advise you on how much he needs to gain, and a safe way for him to do that. I would bring a sample of his feces with you for the vet to examine. The reason being is that intestinal worms can cause a dog to lose weight despite eating, and if he's outside all the time running around and isn't up to date on his deworming treatment, that could also contribute to his weight loss.
