My 9-year-old male pit bull has lumps on his testicles. Is it cancer?

Unfortunately any skin mass can be cancerous but the good news is that most are benign. The only way to know for sure is the have a small sample of the mass collected and examined under the microscope. I recommend for Pepper to see his veterinarian. Sometimes the doctor can tell by palpation but other times they need to see the cells. Anytime you have a dark colored mass, melanoma is on the concern list. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Being benign vs. malignant is more based on how it looks under the microscope. It can still be benign even if it is not very movable. This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. It's hard to know how serious is it at this point. Dogs can develop testicular cancer. I recommend you have Brownie examined by your veterinarian as soon as possible to help determine if biopsy or surgery are needed. Good luck !

The tumor in your picture does look like it needs to be removed, but if there are multiple tumors and/or they are in a location that would make surgery challenging it could be a lot to put him through. You may want to ask your vet if a fine needle aspirate if the tumor or even a biopsy could help determine prognosis with surgery - if it is a tumor type that can be ‘cured’ with surgery it may be worth going forward. If the prognosis is not good surgery may not be worth it.

Without an exam or diagnostics, it is near impossible to say. It could be anything from local inflammation/infection to a benign or malignant mass. Given Ruckess' history, an exam with your veterinarian or veterinary oncologist would be recommended. A fine needle aspirate can be done to collect a sample for pathology.

These are masses (tumors) that should be examined by your vet. Just by looking at them it is not possible to determine whether they are malignant or benign, but your vet can do a so-called FNA (Fine Needle Aspirate) where he takes a little bit of tissue of the growth with a very fine injection needle (usually does not hurt) and sends it to a laboratory to determine malignancy.
