My dog is territorial with food and toys around other dogs. What to do?

Hi doc my French bulldog started to get territorial with food and toys when another dog gets close to him what can I do to make him stop theagression

It's normal for dogs to be somewhat possessive over food and toys with other dogs, so without more information it's hard to say whether this is an issue or not. In many cases, it's easier to simply manage this issue by feeding the dogs separately and not giving high-value chew toys or other items that are likely to cause fights when the dogs are together. If you feel that the aggression is excessive (i.e., there have been injuries to the dogs, or he behaves this way over everything, rather than just food and high-value items), it is possible to work on the problem but this takes a lot of time and effort. The basic approach involves teaching him that having another dog nearby when he is eating means good things for him - often this is done by walking another dog nearby, feeding a treat, and moving the other dog away. It usually takes hands-on guidance from a professional to do this correctly, so if this is something you want to work on, I would strongly recommend getting in touch with a good reward-based trainer in your area.

You will have to do some training with him and the other dogs. Here is a link with directions on clicker training for food guarding. It is going to take some time but with patience and persistence it can be accomplished.

This is a very common (and even normal) behavior for many dogs. Usually, the simplest way to handle this is to avoid feeding treats to Ralph or other dogs when they are together, and feed meals in crates or separate rooms. For many dogs, these simple management strategies are all that is needed.

It is possible to work on this issue through training, but this can be very difficult to do correctly on your own, so I would strongly recommend working with a veterinary behaviorist or a good reward-based trainer who can help you in person if you want to try this. I would also highly recommend the book "Mine!" by Jean Donaldson - it has lots of great information on this behavior issue in dogs, including detailed instructions for how to work on the problem if you wish.

My dogs are possessive over toys. How to stop growling?

This is not unusual behavior as they are trying to work things out. I recommend to always supervise them together until you know there is not chance of a fight. Some dogs are more possessive of toys or food or their person and thats just how they are. Certainly not leaving toys down and only giving them toys when you are home to supervise will help. Do not allow them to steal each other's toys. Also, both dogs will likely think ALL the toys belong to themselves and not the other dog. If you cannot supervise then, you may separate them during chew times with their toys. Heavy daily exercise will help to get some of the energy out and this can help to decrease aggression. I also recommend to pick up some books about dog behavior so that you can recognize what the dogs are saying to each other. Lastly, there are several different training methods out there. You may opt to find a trainer who can come to your house and show you how to modify the dogs' behavior. Find a trainer who's style works with yours. How to stop my dog from being food aggressive around other dogs?

Food aggression is common, especially in dogs that have not been properly or adequately socialized. You can try gradually desensitizing her to the presence of other dogs during mealtime. Do this for very short periods of time, then gradually increase the time and decrease the distance. Correct any negative behavior immediately and praise/reward compliance consistently. If she gets too aggressive, separate her to prevent fights or injury. A pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar, may help decrease any anxiety or aggression during mealtimes and other times.

My dogs are fighting over food and jealousy. How can I help?

I hate to hear this is happening. Unfortunately, it's impossible to know how best to advise you without being able to read the body language of the dogs. It's possible this is occurring because they are maturing. Both dogs also need to be spayed/neutered because this can help to decrease aggression. Intact dogs are much more likely to fight and have problems. Canine aggression is a complex behavior as it can stem from dominance, possessiveness, fear, anxiety, resource guarding or a combination. Most people are not familiar with reading canine body language and training. Because of this, I recommend to work with a professional trainer. Researching on your own will also be helpful. Familiarizing yourself with canine body language and dog training can help you to recognize what your pet is trying to say. You can find many books written on the topic and there is a trainer named Victoria Stilwell who I think is particularly helpful. Best of luck.

This is called resource guarding. There is rarely a need to touch a pet's food while they are eating - it is quite normal for them to want to finish the meal and be protective of it. During playtime, distract Zelda with a toy other than the one she is playing with to get it away from her rather than just taking it away.

My dog growls at new dog over food. How can I feed them together?

Hi there. It's actually quite normal for dogs to want to protect their food from other dogs - as you've observed, this is not correlated with an increased risk of resource guarding towards humans. Having dogs eat side by side is somewhat unnatural, and many dogs aren't comfortable with this. If either dog shows any signs of guarding, I would recommend simply feeding them separately long-term. There is no benefit to going through a long training process to try and make them eat together, and this will likely be stressful for both dogs. Just feed them in separate rooms or crates, and let them back together when they're both finished eating.
