My dog has hives and limping. Can he take prednisone with NSAIDs?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 3 months old | 77 lbs

Hi, my dog has allergies, and he has had hives several times before. Normally, he is given an allergy shot and prednisone. This works well. I took him to the vet yesterday because he had hives and he was also limping. He was given a 75mg shot of benadryl for the hives and 75mg (×10) Carprofen to take home for the limping. Today, the hives are much worse. I know you can't mix nsaids and prednisone. He's already had 75mg benadryl today. What else can I do?

You can try to "wait out" thee hives, as they may go away by themselves by Monday. In exceptional situations it is possible to give one prednisone injection after a few doses of carprofen, There is always a risk of gastric bleeding, but in the case of the allergy being more prominent or life threatening than the lameness, a one-time prednisone/prednisolone shot can be given. with relatively low risk of gastric bleeding.

If he is having side effects then you could skip today. Since it is just a short course of steroids, it shouldn’t be a problem to miss a day. You could also give him 1/2 the dose and see if he has less side effects with a lower dose. Hopefully, the itching has improved. If he needs long term allergy medications then you could talk to your vet about Cytopoint or Apoquel.

Great question! No, you absolutely CANNOT give a steroid (prednisone) at the same time as a NSAID (Metacam). This is a very big no-no! This can cause huge, life-threatening side effects. He can take a muscle relaxant and/or an opiate along with the steroid. You should also you vet about these medications as they are prescription medications. I would be concerned that there is still swelling, potentially irritating the trachea or throat if Apollo is also now coughing and the hives haven't resolved after two days of home treatment. If this continues or worsens it would be best to seek veterinary care to have Apollo examined and treated with a strong medication to help stop the allergic reaction, especially if he is having swelling of the face or neck, or is having trouble breathing.

My dog has severe allergies. Can he safely take multiple medications?

Fighting secondary skin infections and allergies is tough. Drugs like prednisone and Apoquel are used to control inflammation. In some cases, we add a drug in an effort to taper prednisone if long term immunosuppression is needed. Ideally, long term immunosuppressives should be avoided but in some cases are needed. You should consider discussing referral to a veterinary dermatologist for intradermal skin testing.

Why is my dog lethargic after abrupt Prednisone to Rimadyl switch?

I definitely agree that prednisone tapering should take much longer but if you have already switched him to Rimadyl you cannot give him the prednisone anymore. if you have not switched him yest you should do a much slower tapering over a period of at least 2 weeks, reducing gradually every 5-7 days.
