Puppy's tail slammed in door, swollen but wagging. Vet visit?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Female | spayed | 10 months and 21 days old | 82 lbs

Our storm door slammed on my 10 month old puppy‘s tail this morning. She loudly yelped and sprayed anal gland secretions. The base of her tail is swollen and she’s being pretty protective of it,but she is still moving and wagging her tail. I’ve read that the base of the tail contains important nerves. How do I know whether to seek treatment?

Poor Millie! The fact that the tail is swollen and that Millie is acting protective of it likely indicates pain, so I recommend making an appointment to have her seen by your vet as soon as you can, as you are correct that there are lots of important nerves in the area. Pain medication meant for people can be toxic to dogs and should not be used without checking with a vet first. If she is licking at the area, I recommend you put an e-collar (cone) on Millie to help reduce the risk of infection.
