Dog tail cut and won't stop bleeding. Is amputation the only fix?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 10 lbs

I am a groomer and I just accidentally cut the tip off a dog's tail. I was the size of a very small pea. I had to apply .pressure because It wouldn't stop bleeding. The owner took him to the vets and they said they had to cut 1 1/2 inches off the tail to fix it. I'm in shock. Is this right? Gail

Hi and thanks for your request.
Unfortunately this may be right as these type of injuries are very difficult to heal completely (as they are almost impossible to bandage and dogs wag their tail constantly). The vast majority of these injuries, even if look minuscule, end up having a surgical resolution (variable tail amputation).

Poor puppy! Tail wounds can be very difficult to heal, especially once they have had stitches pulled out as there is very limited skin available and in many cases will need to be left alone to heal for 4-6weeks before the wound can be reassessed and possibly reconstructed again. The area is prone to infection so will need to be monitored closely and kept clean with antibiotics as required. I would be concerned as to why the tail needed to be amaputated and why the puppy keeps attacking the area - chiropractic care, acupuncture and further pain relief may need to be considered in order to resolve the discomfort he is feeling

Poor Brudis! If it's the first time this has happened, there is a good chance that it will be able to heal with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication, along with keeping it bandaged and protected for the next 2-3 weeks or so. If it doesn't seem to be healing in that amount of time, or if this problem recurs later on, this is normally when amputation would be considered - most of the dogs I have seen who required tail amputations were "repeat offenders" who were constantly whacking their tails against things :) So I don't normally jump straight to this as a solution, since many wounds like this will heal just fine with time and care.

How to manage a dog's bleeding tail and keep it from re-bleeding?

It may be tricky as wounded tail keeps bleeding. So, if it is bleeding a lot you should apply pressure for a few minutes (5 minutes) on the tail until the bleeding stops. Then you may have to apply a bandage on the tail to prevent another bleed (it may start again if the dog starts to chew or lick the tail or even if he starts wagging the tail). Bandaging the tail can be difficult - you don't want to put too much pressure but on the other hand loose bandage will slip off. If it come to the worst you may have to take your dog to your vet to put a proper bandage on.

My dog's tail slammed in door, still bleeding after vet. What to do?

I'm sorry Samantha's tail was slammed in a dog! First off, you did exactly the right thing by taking her into the vet. The problem with tail wounds is that dogs wag their tails, putting the wound at risk of opening back up. If Samantha is wagging her tail, that's probably why you are still seeing a bit of blood. If it's only a bit of blood, then I wouldn't be concerned. If it's a lot of blood, I would be concerned, and then you should take her back into your vet. It's impossible to get a dog to stop wagging their tail, so I recommend putting a bandage over the wound where it's bleeding in an effort to stop the bleeding. Don't put the bandage on so tight that it restricts blood flow to the tail. Samantha may want to bite and chew at the bandage, so I would get an Ecollar from the pet store to prevent her from doing that.

How to treat my dog's bleeding tail from happy tail syndrome?

It is very difficult to treat happy tail sometimes - most bandages do tend to fall off. I've seen veterinarians wrap the tail between the legs in a bandage on the belly, but this will only work if Dexter's tail is long enough. Sometimes surgery to amputate the end of the tail is necessary since the wound never heals.

Why isn't my dog's tail wound healing after being shut in a door?

It can take a long time for a wound on the end of the tail to heal, and sometimes wounds in this area never heal right due to trauma and lack of blood supply. I would recommend rechecking with your vet - sometimes amputating the tip of the tail is necessary to get a wound to heal.

My dog keeps chewing her raw, bleeding tail. How can it heal?

Tail wounds are difficult to heal. You are doing a good job but need to place her in a cone to stop the licking and chewing. The wound can’t heal with constant irritation. I also would check her for fleas to make sure that isn’t the reason she started the chewing, and also you may want to have her anal sacs checked since if they are full they can cause itching in this area. Your veterinarian can also prescribe medication to control the itch and inflammation and antibiotics if they feel the area is infected. Be patient and continue with your treatment and this will heal in time. A tail amputation is a serious surgery and she would probably chew the incision and make a sore so you wouldn’t be any better off than you are now. My dog keeps biting his tail and it's bleeding. What should I do?

Hello. Unfortunately, unless you can get to the bottom of the problem, these type conditions can be very difficult to cure. Bandaging while wearing a Elizabethan cone can help for a while, & if it can heal, the problem may be solved. But if this a recurrent injury, allergy, neurologic or even a compulsive-obsessive behavior, treatments are often a bit more complex involving long term medication & sometimes even amputation of most of the tail. The first thing the tail needs is antibiotics as the tail does look infected. I think you really need to see your veterinarian with Ramces to see why this has happened & what is the right direction to go in to heal things up.
