Dog bit tail, bone exposed. Why is he shivering and losing appetite?

George sounds like he has a severe infection. Bandaging and daily cleaning ifs good for wounds, but this one needs more than that. He likely needs antibiotics and pain medication to make him feel better. The shivering is concerning that he may be spiking a fever, which would be due to the infection. Given this, I would not delay taking him to the vet for an evaluation and treatment. They will be able to assess the extent of damage and provide the appropriate treatment. Usually, when they are treated with antibiotics and pain medication, they get much better within a couple of days. I hope that helps and George gets some good help soon.

Hello, sorry to hear about Bolt. It does appear that he is very itchy near his rear end. The most common cause for this is actually flea allergy dermatitis. This is a hypersensitivity to flea saliva that causes dogs to become very itchy, can cause lethargy, anxiety, innapetence, excessive panting. and restlessness. The condition is very uncomfortable for pets and if Bolt is feeling very uneasy then it may be worth while to have him seen by a veterinarian tonight so that they may administer anti-flea medications with a fast kill and something to stop the allergic reaction to the flea saliva. If Bolt is not too uncomfortable, then placing an e-collar on him so that he may not lick or scratch and having seen by his primary care veterinarian tomorrow is also acceptable. In addition to this, you will need to place all of your pets on year round flea control and treat their environment with anti-flea products. Hope this helps and best of luck.

This is medical emergency and Duke has to see a vet now. This will be extremely painful for him, and I would be concerned that the area is becoming necrotic. He needs veterinary care for this immediately. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Oh no. Poor guy. It sounds like he may have developed limber tail, which is caused by overworking or stressing of the tail muscle. At this point, I would consider having the tail surgically amputated and then getting Debo Foster on stool softeners until he makes a full recovery. Tail amputation from having a happy tail is a common procedure that has to be done in many over-excited pets. Anti-inflammatories will need to be used to help him hopefully regain function of his tail. Until you can get him seen, its best to do cold compresses followed by warm compresses (if allowed) on the tail for 5 mins twice a day. You should then schedule an appt quickly with your vet. It sounds like he has a degloving injury to his tail. If there is bone showing, then he needs to see a vet right away. This can easily get infected, and he will need antibiotics to prevent it. In a degloving injury of a rat's tail, the skin and tissue do not grow back, and the bone showing may need to be removed surgically. This will be painful to him as well, and he will need pain medications for it. I would take him into a vet now.

This does not look correct and in my opinion this needs to be re-operated on, i.e. the skin around the bone needs to be mobilised, freshened and stretched and sutured over the bone, or, if the bone protrudes too much, that last tail vertebra needs to be removed and the skin and tissue freshened up and sutured. This may heal by second intention ( by putting ointment on it ), but there is also a chance that it will not and that the bone will stay exposed, or that infection sets in.

The skin will probably not grow back and the tail will probably go through a process of necrosis, which may put his life in danger. i strongly recommend taking him to the vet, the tip of the tail will probably need to be amputated.
