My dog's swollen paw popped and is oozing. Does it need a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Bulldog | Male | neutered | 65 lbs

I noticed today my dog had a swollen paw. We do have thorny weeds but it’s in a difficult spot for a thorn to get stuck. After a day of peroxide and wrapping it popped and starting oozing a little watery blood. He’s no longer limping so I’m assuming it’s getting better. Any thoughts? Thank you!!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Based on the pictures that you sent, what you are seeing appears to be what we call pododermatitis. Oftentimes we will see these swollen areas in between the toes on Bulldogs especially. Many times a topical ointment, anti-inflammatory and oral antibiotics are needed to treat this. I would suggest having a veterinarian examine this to see if it needs any antibiotics or not. If you are unable to get to your vet right away, I would suggest using zymox topical ointment and malacetic conditioning spray, both of which can be found online. I hope this helps! I would recommend trying a product called malacetic conditioning spray and apply to the area until resolved. You may have to see your veterinarian to discuss alternative treatment options such as steroid therapy or immunomodulatory therapy to treat and immune-mediated disease. Feline plasma cell pododermatitis can appear like this and treatment is suppressing the immune system and antibiotic therapy. I hope this helps! Puppy paw swollen, oozing discharge. What's wrong and what to do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to see Aly isn’t feeling well. It’s hard to say what is going on from the pictures alone. I would recommend soaking the foot in epsom salt for about 15 minutes tonight and then see your vet in the morning for a closer look. There may be an infection or abscess that needs drainage and antibiotics. Do not give her any medications tonight but the soak will help some of the swelling to get you until your appointment. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bella! Based on your pictures that isn't a growth but a paw pad abrasion. I see it when the dog runs too much on asphalt or tennis courts chasing balls and skidding. I have seen multiple feet and multiple pads affected and peel like blisters. They heal quickly by preventing licking with an E-collar, soaking in Epsom salts, oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. I wish you and Bella the best!

However, just like you pointed out, there may be a foreign body stuck in there or something else causing an infection. I recommend that you have Tank evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. Antibiotics can be started and they can also check to see if there is something stuck there that they can remove to provide comfort and also prevent the infection from reoccurring. My bulldog's swollen paw popped. What came out and what now?

Hello, sorry to hear about Monster. That looks like fatty or necrotic tissue. It does not obviously look like anything foreign, but it may be necrotic tissue encapsulating a foreign object. Ideally, you should have monster seen by a veterinarian, because these type of draining tracts are commonly associated with some form of foreign object. Which if confirmed, would need to be removed to treat the infection. The peroxide and antibiotic ointment are likely treating the outside infection, but are not doing anything to treat whats within the pocket. Additionally, dogs will often require oral antibiotics to treat an infected draining tract. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My puppy's toe is swollen. What could be wrong and what should I do?

I would have this looked at by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend having x-rays taken of the toe to make sure the toe is not broken. If there is no broken bones, then I worry about a bacterial infection and he may need to be placed on oral antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
