My dog's paw is swollen from a bug bite. What home remedies help?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to see that Savie is having a problem. This looks like a pustule or pus filled pimple. It could also be a cyst or other swelling. This could certainly be from an insect sting, spider bite, puncture wound, skin infection, etc. I would advise warm compressing the area 2-3 times daily with a warm cloth to see if you can get the area to come to a head and drain. You could also try placing some warm water and Epsom Salts in a basin and make her stand in the water for 5-10 minutes a few times daily. You may need to get her an E collar to prevent her from licking it and prevent the healing. If this lesion gets worse, spreads, or other signs develop, please have your vet take a look at her. They can get a detailed history and perform a physical exam. Diagnostics probably won't be needed unless the situation changes. Your vet can advise you on a sound treatment approach if needed. Poor girl. Sometimes Benadryl can be tried in pets with an acute allergic reaction to insect bites with success. You can also try applying a cold compress on the swollen area for 5-10 minutes (if allowed) to reduce the swelling. As long as the swelling improves and does not spread over the next 24 hrs, and Sophia does not have any systemic effects (i..e lethargy, pale gums, heavy breathing, swelling around the neck), then she can potentially recover from this with antihistamines (i.e. diphenhydramine) alone. However some pets will require a steroid shot to stop the reaction, which your vet should be able to give Sophia if needed.

I'm sorry this happened but you must understand this is a very serious wound and should be treated by your local veterinarian. She should be on oral antibiotics. No matter is what is applied to this topically, it will not heal if she continues to chew at it. You will need to either keep it bandaged (provided she does not chew the bandage off) or get her a cone collar like this one until it is healed. Be sure to get the appropriate size. The collar must go past the end of the nose or she will still be able to chew at the wound. Soak Kai's foot in a bowl of warm water with either Epsom salts or bicarbonate of soda powder added which can help reduce the itching and swelling. To prevent her licking her foot use an e collar or cone and cover with a sock. You can also try using Benadryl at the standard dose.

This most commonly happens when a string or piece of towel or blanket gets wrapped anound the foot. Please check it carefully to make sure nothing is stuck on it stopping the circulation. Then you can soak the foot in warm water and massage it to increase the circulation which should reduce the swelling. Do this several times a day. Make sure he’s still eating and is kept warm. Poor Rex! Unfortunately, there are no safe OTC medications you can give him, as many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. You can try soaking his paw in an Epsom salt bath to see if that helps with the swelling. If it doesn't, he will need to see a vet on Monday. He may have an infection in his paw or he could have a foreign body causing the swelling. The vet can diagnose what is causing the swelling so Rex can be treated.

Ouch! Poor Maggie! That swelling around the bite is an indication of infection and looks like Maggie needs antibiotics. It also looks very painful so Maggie needs to go to a veterinarian to have it evaluated. That bite is near a joint so I would take her right away to avoid any serious infections.
