My Lab has a swollen leg. What do his blood test results show?

That blood work all looks fine. The abnormal results you're seeing under the "RBC indicies" are about some characteristics of the red blood cells, but are not of concern. The BUN and creatinine numbers suggest his kidneys are in good health. So that's good news. However it doesn't explain at all what's going on with his leg because that is certainly not all right. The next step is likely x-rays if that's an option. Possible causes I would be most concerned about include trauma, infection, and cancer. Wishing you and Bruno the best of luck.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The blood results show that Finn definitely has some problems with the liver. Some of the liver enzymes and bilirubin are mildly elevated, which is never normal. What is more, ALP and GGT results could not be determined. It means that there was a machine fault when measuring these parameters, or these values were too high for the machine to read. I would suggest to run bile acid stimulation test, ultrasound scan of the liver and repeat the blood test that was run at your vets on the 7/15/20. You may consider running ACTH stimulation test to check for Cushing's disease, but it is unlikely that Finn has this problem. Based on these results, it can be decided what to do next.

I can see the swelling from the pictures you posted. It appears the swelling goes form the foot all the way to the knee. I see that you live in an area where snake bite is possible. I would check thoroughly for any punctures along the entire leg and see if Diamond is painful in any particular area. If not, other causes of swelling like this could include infection, allergic reaction, trauma, cancer, among others. Sometimes swelling in an entire limb can be caused by decreased lymphatic flow - this can be caused by damage to lymph nodes or a structure under the skin or inside the body that is impinging on the lymph flow. I have also seen swelling like this with a flare-up of a mast cell tumor elsewhere on the body. I agree with your vet; if the medications prescribed to not make a difference, additional diagnostics are warranted. They may include bloodwork, abdominal x-rays, tick testing, or sampling of any small masses found.

With the swollen leg and vomiting, there could be a systemic illness or infection going on. I would have his blood tested and have x-rays taken of the leg and abdomen. Hi, Joints swellings are caused by an accumulation of fluid in the joint. This condition may be caused by different conditions most commonly: degenerative joint disease (DJD - arthritis), injuries, infectious disease (chronic infection and some tick borne disease) , immune mediated (immune-mediated polyarthritis , lupus) , cancer (mostly bone tumors), swellings due to blood accumulation in the joint of dogs with clotting disorders. Gout is very rare and actually never been accurately documented in dogs. I would suggest to take her to the vet again to give pain relief if painful and try to diagnose the underlying cause. I am sorry Scooby is not feeling well. Typically this swelling is called edema. Edema is when fluid accumulates and can be due to many things. The test results you posted do not have tick titers. If you are concerned about tick disease I would test for tick titers. Also another piece of information that would be helpful is a protein level. When protein levels are low it allows edema. The doxycycline itself will not cause edema. However if Scooby does not have a tick born disease it is possible the doxycycline is not going to be useful in solving his problem. I hope that helps

We only get concerned about kidney damage when the albumin is moderate-severe and also when CREA is high. High BUN can indicate a GI bleed or a high protein diet in most cases. I don't see a complete cell count (CBC) analysis in the records you sent. Swelling of the limb can indicate edema, a musculoskeletal injury or even a seroma. I would suggest doing a urinalysis to rule out a UTI or stones causing the bloody discharge you are seeing, and a radiograph of the leg (if medical management with an anti-inflammatory hasn't shown improvement with this already).
