My dog's gums are swollen over his teeth. What should I do to help?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 4 months old | 97 lbs

6 year old pitbull male gums have swollen sligthly over tooth in 2 spots as of lately he's been sneaking poop out of the cat litter box as well which is what I assume may have lead to swelling. What do I need to do to help him he's still eating with no pain does this mean his condition is reversible?

Although the fact that Ace is eating cat poop is kind of gross, it's not the cause of the issue. That swelling looks like it could be due to something called gingival hyperplasia. This is a benign growth of the gums that ends up resulting in excessive gum tissue. Even though this is a benign growth it's recommended that the tissue be surgically removed to prevent infection from developing in the teeth.

Unfortunately tumors or cancer of the gum tissue can also have this appearance. I'd recommend having Ace examined by your veterinarian. A sample of the tissue can be taken for biopsy to ensure this is not a cancerous process.

Yes! I would take him to the vet for an exam. The swelling you are seeing is due to infection. Over time the infection will loosen the dental ligaments and the teeth will fall out. This is a painful condition and should be addressed with a dental cleaning, some antibiotics and maybe a long term antimicrobial rinse for the mouth that you can do at home. My dog has a gum bump on their canine tooth. What should I do?

This is a condition called gingival hyperplasia which is just extra gum growth. At your pets next dental cleaning have the vet take a closer look underneath the excess gum. If the gum needs to be shaved away, then the vet can do that at the time of the cleaning to help prevent an accumulation of tartar underneath. Best of luck with your pet moving forward. Take care.

Hello, that looks like gingival hyperplasia. This a common disease in dogs with dental disease. It is typically benign, but may cause some discomfort and bleeding if it ever gets too large. It can also be removed by your veterinarian during's Piper's next dental cleaning. Contact your veterinarian and have them evaluate her for an oral exam and determine if she needs to have her teeth cleaned. If it looks very similar to the one that was removed and tested, it’s probably the same thing. (Though we can never guarantee as some kids of cancer can look similar.) Usually there is nothing to do treatment or prevention-wise except remove them at routine dental cleaning. And I do recommend routine dental cleaning as tartar can build up dramatically under that gum tissue. Best of luck to you and Lilly!

My dog has a large, pink, swollen gum bump. What should I do?

Poor girl. This is unfortunately an oral mass and should be tested by your vet soon to determine if this is cancerous or benign (non-cancerous). Due to Sugar's age and breed there is unfortunately a higher risk of cancer, but we should know for sure after it is tested. Hi, While I can’t say with certainty without an exam, I would strongly recommend having this gingival mass evaluated by a veterinarian. In many cases these are benign gingival hyperplasia (just meaning excessive tissue), but other times these masses can be malignant cancer.
