Can I safely switch my dog from Proheart to Heartguard at due date?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 34 lbs

My dog gets the Proheart injectable every 6mo. I want to go back to Heartguard chewable. She's due for the proheart again the end of the month. Is it safe to change her over at her due date? Thanks

In most cases, it is fine to change over to an oral preventive unless you live in a heavily heartworm infested area. The Proheart releases a small amount every day where as the tablet is only in the blood stream once a month. I recommend to call your local veterinarian to double check that this is ok. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
