My dog swallowed cardboard. Is it dangerous? What should I do now?

Hello. I hope you are having fun with Bodhi. Lots of puppies love to chew cardboard boxes. As long as the pieces are small when he swallows them it should be ok. It can cause an obstruction if he eats a lot of cardboard, however if he is chewing and just gets a small amount that is ok.

That was naughty of Domino to bite into that box! At this point in time, you don't have to do anything. Even if he ate a bit of the cardboard and plastic, it doesn't appear to be a large amount and should pass without problem. Domino should be ok :-)

There is a chance of stomach upset if the bird was already dead, so if anytime in the next few days Asta starts vomiting, develops diarrhea, stops eating or just seem to feel unwell, please contact your veterinarian for recommended treatment. It would help to know how much Zyrtec he may have eaten - this medication can be given to dogs but too many pills could cause symptoms of toxicity. Cardboard would be unlikely to cause a problem although again if he ate a large amount there would be potential for obstruction. I wouldn't worry too much about him eating extra food today. Even if his belly seems large as long as he seems comfortable and is not vomiting veterinary care will probably not be required. Feel free to repost your question with more details about the Zyrtec.

I am sorry to hear about Enzo! If the card is paper it should not cause any problems. If the card is plastic, then in many cases they will pass small amounts of plastic that have been chewed with no problem, but it is best to observe Enzo for several days for signs of a blockage of the intestinal tract such as vomiting, decreased appetite, abdominal pain, lethargy, or straining to have a bowel movement. You can try feeding some whole grain bread that is high in fiber to try to help things pass along. If he does develop any of these symptoms then seek veterinary care. Best of luck to you and Enzo!

Hi, if the wrapper has been thorn into pieces it will probably pass through his gastro intestinal tract together with other food. If it was a large piece swollowed as whole, there is the risk of obstruction and you need to monitor him closely for any vomiting or diarrhoea or straining to go to the toilet or abdominal pain. As long as the granola didn't contain chocolate, macadamia nuts or raisins I wouldn't be concerned about toxicity. This could cause some upset stomach however, and since granola can be high in fat you could see pancreatitis develop. I would guess that cardboard would be digested, but if there was any plastic then there could be concern for an obstruction as well. I would recommend monitoring Bear for any vomiting, decreased appetite or diarrhea and contacting your vet right away if you see any of these signs.
