My pet's surgery stitches are loose and wound is pink. Is this normal?

Some drainage after drain removal is often expected as the volume is increasing I recommend you get her rechecked at your vets office in the morning, it may be necessary to replace the drain until the wound has further healed. It is positive that the fluid is not foul smelling and pinkish-brown indicates no current, active bleeding so unless anything changes waiting for regular office hours would be appropriate

Hi there. Often, losing a single suture a few days after surgery isn't a huge deal, especially if the incision still appears to be closed and there is no bleeding or drainage. But it's hard to say if this is a problem or not without being able to see it. If you want to, you can post a photo of the incision for us to look at - we may be able to give you a better idea of whether it needs any treatment.

A small amount of straw-colored or blood-tinged fluid is common after surgery and usually isn't a concern. Just try to keep the incisions free of discharge by gently cleaning with a warm wash cloth. If the incisions look very red, puffy, and have thick discharge that has a foul odor, then an infection could be developing. The wound looks dry and not swollen. A small amount of discharge (not pus) even clear blood, would be normal. If your dog is otherwise normal, eating and drinking ok and normal activity level and not painful, I would just monitor her at this stage and make sure she does not lick the wound and rest her as much as possible. A buster collar would be helpful in case of any licking.

I’m not sure what type of surgery was done, or what types of tubes are left. This makes it hard to answer as well as I would like. However, anytime my clients have ANY concern about a healing surgical patient, then I want to see them and evaluated the incision. If your doctor says it fine then great! In some cases, a small amount of serous or serosanguinous (clear or pinkish) discharge can occur a day or two after surgery. However, Elvis should be checked by his vet to make sure the incision has not become infected or developed a seroma, and is healing properly. Keep using his cone of shame to prevent any licking. Depending on the extent of the bleeding, it may or may not be significant. Small amounts of bleeding or red tinged discharge are to be expected for short periods of time following a surgical procedure. A steady flow or blood or thick discharge should be considered concerning. If the latter is occurring, I would seek out an emergency 24 hour veterinarian to assess the area. If this is not possible. you can apply a pressure bandage to the affected area to stem the flow of blood. You can do this with regular bandage material from a pharmacy and some surgical tape.
