Why is my dog suddenly scared of a room? What can I do to help?

I'd always want to rule out a medical problem when there has been an abrupt change in behavior. A visit to the vet is in order to help to ensure that there are no underlying issues - changes in vision, neurologic issues, etc - that may be at the bottom of this. If everything is well with your health, ask yourself some questions: could there be any nocturnal animals visiting your property, and would she be able to see them or smell them? Could there be distant thunderstorms that she is hearing (and you're not, because you're sleeping) and the noise is making her anxious? It sounds like he is experiencing some separation anxiety when left in the kitchen. You could try an Adaptil collar and Solliquin chews and see if that helps. This sounds like something scared her. Think back to see if you can determine the cause of her anxiety. Then you’ll be able to work on changing this behavior. When training anxious dogs I usually have them on an anti anxiety supplement like Solliquin, or another brand that they sell at PetCo. That helps them relax and makes them easier to train. Always praise good behavior and give treats to build her confidence. That will help her trust you and be more relaxed in stressful situations. Although I can't be exactly sure there may be something causing Kenai's anxiety in he middle of the night. Sometimes a noise that occurs (perhaps snoring or something while sleeping in your case) is causing Kenai's anxiety. If there are loud noises outside like thunder, gun shots, cars back firing this could also trigger this response. It may even be a sound imperceptible to you. My first suggestion is to try an Adaptil collar to see if this lessens some anxiety. This is a pheromone collar that tends to work nicely with mild anxiety. There are supplements like Solliquin that may also be helpful. Even adding a white noise machine may be worthwhile to block out some sound. It may be helpful to crate train Kenai at least for sleeping. Sometimes have a "settle location" like a crate can help reduce a dog's anxiety. Finally, if there is no improvement it would be a good idea to have Kenai examined by your veterinarian to ensure there isn't any underlying health problem contributing to the behavior. Sometimes pain or infection can manifest in anxious behaviors. If necessary your veterinarian can prescribe a medication for anxiety. I hope this is helpful! Leave the lights on so he can acclimate and see they is no danger. Don't force him to go into the room or near the lights. If and when he does, praise and reward him. Consider a pheromone product such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser to decrease any anxiety.

It sounds like Alex got startled pretty badly. I'd give him a few days to settle back down and relax and let him explore the room again on his own. If he does go into it, giving him his favorite treat and some praise can help him to associate it with good things again.

This actually isn’t an uncommon problem. But the fact that it comes and goes depending on the day and the used to be fine is a little more concerning. I would suggest a vet check up because sudden changes could indicate a change in health (maybe sight?). And I would want to rule out any medical causes. Next to work on this issue I would put lots of area mats down or a carpet runner. Your dog should be more comfortable walking on that. I would get the dog used to coming back in the room on carpet and king carpet to carpet. Please them maybe a foot apart at first and put treats on the one your dog isn’t on. The plan is to get your pup comfortable going back and forth between the mats and getting rewarded for it so it’s a positive experience. Once they are comfortably going back and forth you can start to increase he distance between the mats and repeat the process. Hopefully with some positive reinforcement and work your pup will get comfortable again
