Why does my dog suckle or nibble on blankets and bedding? Is it normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

I have a Maltese cross shih tzu probably around 7 years old. He like 'nibbles' on blankets and bedding and was wondering if there's a reason behind why he does it?

My dog did this also. He was taken away from his mother very young so this seems to be a nursing reflex. Mine did it when he was happy and cuddly. It's not a problem unless Levi is eating pieces of the blankets or bedding. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Levi.
