Stubborn fleas for months! How to keep them out of my new house?

Only 5% of a flea population is adult fleas on a pet and targeted by shampoo and flea treatment. I recommend using a long acting product such as bravecto (3mths) or seresto collar (8mobtgs) and maintain protection for at least 18months to target fleas as they hatch. An insecticidal household spray or professional fumigators by pest control is vital to kill the eggs and larvae as well as disposing of bedding etc

Fleas can be very frustrating to deal with! In my experience, Hartz products and other over-the-counter options like flea shampoos, diatomaceous earth, etc. are not very effective. First, I would recommend getting good quality prescription flea medication from your vet for Darwin and your two cats - you won't have any luck getting rid of the fleas in the house until all of the animals area treated. Nexgard or Bravecto are the best choices for dogs, and Revolution or Advantage Multi would be best for the cats. Once that's done, you can treat your house and yard with a premises spray like Knock Off to get rid of the fleas and eggs in the environment. If the problem is severe, you may need to have an exterminator come and treat the environment professionally. Keeping all of your pets on a good quality flea control medication year-around in the future will help to prevent this from being an issue again.

You may wish to consider a product like Capstar or even a topical flea medication in addition to the Bravecto. Products like Frontline Gold, Vectra and Advantix tend to work well. The flea life cycle sometimes necessitates that you also treat your household and even your yard to fully eradicate the infestation. Regular laundering of pet bedding can help but you may still end up needing to have an exterminators help. Finally, make sure all pets in the household are treated with a safe, quality flea preventative as often house cats that have not been treated can harbor fleas. Good luck!

I would recommend either Revolution or Comfortis for flea prevention. If he has a really heavy flea load then you can first give a Capstar, which will get rid of the fleas within 1 hr and then follow up with a flea preventative for long term control. Since treating the environment isn't realistic in your case, the best thing you can do is put a flea pill. They have some you give monthly ( simparica or nexgard) or one every three months ( bravecto). I would recommend the bravecto in your case because it last for 3 months and it typically takes 3 months to get ahead of the life cycle of the fleas you are battling.

I highly recommend that you consider using a product called Capstar which helps to kill a lot of fleas at once and it can be given every day to effect. I would not give up on the Seresto just yet as it may be failed because of heavy flea exposure and it would otherwise work well. However, if this occurs again especially under regular circumstances then that would be the time to consider other flea preventative products such as Bravecto or Frontline day plus for example. The most effective way of cleaning the house is by vacuuming all the surfaces that have contact with Riley on a daily basis until no fleas are seen. There are 2 products that I particularly like in these cases where different therapies have failed to help. I like Bravecto as a preventative and Capstar to be used concurrently as needed for fleas. Capstar is crucial because it can help kill a lot of fleas at once and it can be used as often as once daily to effect. Also, it is important to vacuum the house and all things that have contact with them frequently. Try this for 1-3 months and if does not make a difference, they may have another type of allergy such as a food allergy or environmental allergy. This is likely going to help.
