What can I give my dog to calm storm anxiety and stop licking?

Hello, sorry to hear about your pup. These compulsive behaviors can be associated with stress and anxiety. Occasionally, anti-anxiety medications may be beneficial for your pup so that he does not lick. Alternatively, redirecting the behavior to something he also likes doing (ie playing with a favorite toy, going for a walk, etc.) would help gradually decrease and resolve the behavior. These types of behaviors may be difficult to resolve and could take in addition to medications behavioral classes. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Poor Zora! She does sound like a very anxious girl. If you would like to try a natural calming supplement of some kind, I would suggest Zylkene or Composure - both of these are very safe, and I have seen good results with them in some patients. You could also try a DAP pheromone collar as well, to see if this helps :)

If you have tried everything and nothing is working than your vet could prescribe medications to see if they help. If she seems very anxious than an anti-anxiety medication, like Prozac or Trazodone, may help. You could also try an Adaptil collar and see if that helps. Allergies can be frustrating to diagnose since there are many potential allergens. They can include flea bites, environmental/inhaled allergens or food allergies or sensitivities. It can also be caused by behavioral issues, such as boredom or anxiety. Place an e-collar (cone) on Lou to prevent licking. Discuss allergy testing, food elimination trials and hydrolyzed diets with your veterinarian. A short course of steroids followed by antihistamines may help stop any itch and prevent it from returning. This may be a seasonal issue or it could be year round. You can also discuss anxiety medications and behavioral modification with your veterinarian. When you see Lou licking, distract him and offer a task, exercise or treat to redirect his attention. If he complies, praise and reward him. Be patient and be consistent. Limit his exposure to chemicals and cleaners to see if it makes a difference. Remove any candles or air fresheners from the home as well.

This could definitely be anxiety. It could also be allergies. I have seen dogs do this when they are really itchy. I would try to give her a calming chew like vetrisciecne composure and a calming collar like adaptil. You could also give her benadryl twice a day. See link below. That sounds frustrating! If she is truly obsessively licking and is not necessarily taking pleasure in it, two things I would consider are a trial on anti-anxiety meds (these are prescription) and/or that some studies are linking OCD behaviors with gastrointestinal imabalances (which may respond to diet change and probiotics). Neutering him may help decrease his aggression. You could also try an Adaptil collar and see if that helps. If not, talk to your vet about trying an anti-anxiety medication, like Prozac or Trazodone.
