Dog's stitches are sweating and he removes bandage. What to do?

Check the temperature of the affected leg. It should be approximately the same temperature as the other leg. If it is much cooler you need to take your dog to the vet for a recheck. If the temperature is similar you can rebandage the leg, but make sure it is not too tight. One way to awoid this is to put lots of padding around the leg before putting the previously unrolled and then rerolled sticky bandage on. It may also be a good idea to confine your dog to rest. You may have to rebandage the leg as soon as the swelling has subsided, as the bandage will loosen up. If the swelling does not go down within 24 hours, you will need to take Sterling to your vet for an exam.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think that area should have had stitches, so I’m assuming Buddy licked them out. It only takes a few seconds for a dog to remove them. He should be wearing an E-collar or a donut at all times. He shouldn’t lick that open area either. Clean it well with soap and water and apply a triple antibiotic ointment. It likely will heal on its own as long as he doesn’t continue to lick. I wish Buddy a speedy recovery!

This happens all the time so don't beat yourself up. Put the cone back on immediately. Then gently wipe the incision with a warm, damp cloth and pat dry. Apply neosporin (or other antibiotic ointment) tonight and tomorrow morning, then keep your appointment for tomorrow. The vet may decide to wait to take the stitches out now that there is some inflammation involved. They may also prescribe oral antibiotics if they are worried that Diesel might have infected his incision. If the stitches have been in for less than a week, then yes a vet may want to restitch him. I wouldn't put a liquid bandage on it, I would have Brad evaluated by a vet to determine if it needs to be sutured again. You can take him into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now.

If he is licking at it, use an Elizabethan collar (cone) or apply a light bandage. use caution when applying bandages though. if you make it too tight, you may cause more harm than good. Restrict Bruno's activity to just short leash walks for elimination. Avoid excessive running, jumping or rough play until he is feeling better.

That looks fine for the stage it's at. Rather than cover the wound with a bandage, I would put an e-collar or an inflatable collar on him that will keep him from licking at it, unless he's getting to it with his hind claws. In that case you can put baby socks on his hind feet to keep his claws from getting into the staples. If you do keep it covered, change the bandage daily or twice daily if the wound oozes a bit.

Ideally, if the wound is fresh or recent, it should be cleaned, flushed and sutured by your veterinarian. Place an e-collar (cone) on Annie to prevent licking. She may need antibiotics and pain management which you will need to obtain from your vet.
