Dog's stitches are sweating and he removes bandage. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years old | 62 lbs

My dog recently got stitches, and the stitched up area looks like it's sweating. He keeps taking off the bandages that the vet provided, and I keep putting it back on. Do I need to keep off the bandages that has been wrapped around his leg or do we need to cover it up? He is still on antibiotics and he takes an injection like fluid orally that is anti-inflammatory.

It is best to let your vet place the bandage back on because if it is done incorrectly or placed too tight it can cause further problems to the leg. You vet may always provide an e collar that can prevent him from licking thebsutures or the bandaged to help keep it on. If there is a discharge from the incision, it may need a different type of bandage or different antibiotics.
