My dog has a squishy pink bump on his thigh. When to see a vet?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Is that supposed to be the same growth in both photos? The growth if the first photo looks suspicious for a malignant tumor. The tissue around the mass is swollen and the mass itself is raised and ulcerated; both can be signs of a malignancy. I cannot tell you for sure though just by looking at a photo. The second photo looks like a benign wart. In general, any new lumps/bumps should be examined by your vet. The first photo looks worrisome and I think you should have it checked in the next few days.

Without a picture it's very hard to say. You can post another question with a picture attached if you'd like. From your description, it could be a new mass, a bug bite, irritation from rubbing her nose under something like a door or fence, or it could be a bump related to a tooth abscess. The good news is that it doesn't sound like an emergency and she's not in pain, so your plan to go to her vet tomorrow is good. You don't need to do anything at home for the bump in the mean time. It is hard to tell from this photo but look closely where the lump meets the skin to be sure this isn't a tick attacked to the skin and full (they can fill and become paler/flesh colored). Look for tiny legs or a small head embedded in the skin. If that is not the case it may be a small skin tag. I would have your vet take a look st your dog's next puppy vaccine appointment (at this age he should be seen every 3-4 weeks). If the area becomes irritated or increased in size before then, a vet exam is needed.

Thank you for providing a picture! This could be a cyst or a benign growth. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. A picture of the lump would be very helpful to try to understand its underlying nature and give you further advices without a vet visit. Please repost your question and attach a pic of the lump with it.

Hi again and thanks for sending the pic to us. In this case this lump seems to be a tumor and would need ideally to be checked by your local veterinarian to differentiate in between benign and more sinister ones. The lump seems big enough to be able to take a fine needle aspirate from it without using local or general anesthetic. A small needle can be inserted inside the lump to get some cells out and analyse them.
