My dog has a sprain, still in pain despite medicine. What to do?

Good job, you are doing the right treatment. I like to leash walk them and only go out for potty breaks. Running and jumping can make it worse. I use ice two to four times daily for five to ten minutes. This should improve in a few days. If Ahyoka is not improving then I would bring her in for an exam and X-ray to make sure there is not a broken bone in her wrist. If it's still ill painful they can prescribe pain medication until it heals. I do not recommend giving any human pain medication. By today I would have expected there to be a great improvement in his condition, especially considering the pain medication. I would make a review appointment at the vet as there may be something more serious going on such as a subtle fracture or a tear in a ligament. The vet can do a thorough ortho exam, but it may be necessary for him to be sedated and have xrays to be sure what is going on. Try and keep him calm and confined in the mean time.

She may also benefit from some pain medications, so I would have Sadie seen by a vet who can prescribe some for her. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Limping is a sign of pain. It sounds as though it is likely a strain or a sprain. The best thing to do it limit his activity because continued use will not allow a strain or sprain to heal. So no running, jumping, no stairs or jumping on/off the furniture and leash walks only for at least 7 days. If the limp doesn't improve with in those 7 days Shadow should be seen by a Vet or sooner if it worsens. It is not wrong to have Shadow seen sooner than later as well. Do not give any human pain medications, dogs do not metabolize drugs like people do and they may interfere with medications your Vet may want to prescribe.
