My dog was just spayed. Will she gain weight? How do I care for her?

Hi.. I just got Mini spayed.. Before the procedure, my vet told me that if both the ovaries were to be removed, she would gain a lot of weight.. But, as per the suggestions from doctors through Petco Pet Education Center, I went ahead n got both her ovaries removed. Will she really a lot of weight? If yes, what precautions should I take? N also plz help me with the precuations n how to care for her now after the procedure

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Do no worry about the weight gain. If you feed your Mini good quality food and make sure that gets daily exercises she will not be overweight. Overweight in neutered dogs is usually caused by too rich, inexpensive diet from supermarkets. Removing one ovary is completely pointless from medical perspective.
Now, after the surgery you should not allowed Mini to run, jump or go up and down the stairs. She will be ok to walk on a leash. You need to do that for about 10 days. You can feed her as normal. Please, make sure she does not lick the surgical wound. You can put a head cone on her, but if she doesn't like it you can use a baby t-shirt or buy a special recovery suit. In 10-12 days the wounds should be fully healed and you vet will probably remove her stitches.

Should I change my dog's food to prevent weight gain after spaying?

What an adorable pair of dogs!! No, I would not look into a weight management food just yet. As long as you give her a healthy diet, exercise her daily, and do not give her too many treats or any human food, she can maintain her weight. I have a 10 year old spayed Chow Chow, and I have never had to use a weight management food on her. Just keeping healthy eating habits and daily exercise is enough. I hope this helps!

My dog just got spayed. Should I change her diet or food amount?

Great question! In general, there should be no reason that you would need to change her diet after her spay. She may not be as hungry as usual this evening since she may be sore and still a bit sleepy from the anesthesia, so I would suggest feeding her about half of her normal dinner tonight. Starting the following day, it should be fine for her to go back to her normal amount of food :)

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! No, the care would be the same. Give her medications as prescribed. Strictly rest her: no running, jumping, playing with other dogs and leash walks only for 2 weeks. Use an E-collar or T-shirt to prevent licking of the incision. Watch for increased lethargy, anorexia, or labored breathing. Bleeding is a complication of a spay regardless of if they are in heat or not. Luna should be fine!!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Your Billy should be able to get up and walk a few hours after the surgery. She may be slow and quiet on the day of the surgery, but on the following day she should be active and playful. You do not have to change her diet but you do need to put a head cone on her. She should not be allowed to go out until the wound is fully healed. Depending on the suturing technique, you may have to take her back to your vets in about 10 days time to remove the stitches.
