When is dog spay surgery typically done for same-day pickup?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Typically a combination of drugs is administered prior to the procedure. I typically like giving the pre-medication 15-20 minutes prior to the procedure. This should not set her back and once she is out of the unfamiliar vet clinic, she should be fine. You can ask the veterinarian to pre-medicate her prior to the procedure so that she is not so stressed out. It is not necessary to keep dogs that have been spayed overnight. All of my spay procedures go home that exact same day. If you feel she will be too stressed out while there, I would be more apt to have you keep Sie at home for the post-op recovery period. Awesome job talking to your mom about it :-) After surgery, it's extremely important to keep her quiet and rested, and to keep an Ecollar on her to prevent her from licking at her sutures. She has to stay quiet in order for her incision to heal correctly, and she has to stay quiet with the Ecollar on until her sutures are removed 10-14 days after surgery. Licking at her sutures can cause them to break down and open the incision, and it can introduce infection into the area. You will have to check the incision twice a day for signs of infection which include redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or excessive discharge. If you see any of those signs, Bella will have to go back into the vet for an exam and antibiotics. Again, great job talking to your mom!

In some hospitals, especially at academic institutions, spays can be performed laparoscopically, meaning only a couple very small incisions are made in the abdominal wall. A thin camera is placed through one, and another instrument which can grasp/cauterize/cut tissue is inserted through the other. While these procedures are less invasive, the procedure itself takes much longer than a typical, "open" spay. Most spays can be performed in 15-30 minutes, thus minimizing anesthesia times. Laparoscopic spays tend to take 60-90 minutes. I hope this is helpful!

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The incision, based on this one photo, looks normal to me for one day post-op. It is not uncommon for dogs to be lethargic a day after surgery. If she is wearing a cone collar, many dogs will not walk or move around much due to the cone. That being said, I do not recommend you take the cone off. Eventually they will figure out how to move around with the cone. If she is not wearing a cone, she should be. Ultimately, you know her best. If she does not seem right to you then call your vet or take her to an urgent care vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I'm sorry to hear that you are concerned about Dixi. It is normal for a dog to be quiet after anesthesia. A lot of time they have received IV fluids during surgery so won't need to drink for a while. She is such a small dog though you need to encourage her to eat. The incision site may ooze for a few hours immediately post-operatively, but otherwise should be clean and dry. When you look in her mouth her gums should be pink. Without more information about Dixi it is hard for me to give your further advice. Incision lengths vary from surgeon to surgeon. Since incisions heal from side to side and not from end to end, it takes a short incision the same time to heal as a long incision. Your vet will give you written instructions on how to treat your dog after surgery. Hello and thank you for your question. Masha my hold her bowels for 24 hours without a lot of problem. She should have urinate within 12 hours. Call the veterinarian and ask if they took her out to urinate. That will give you an idea of time. Also ask if she received IV fluids during the procedure. Pets that get these fluids often don't really drink at home that first night because their body go fluids. Do make sure to discuss the urination as well. As long as she is under the influence, she probably won't go to the bathroom but still take her out every couple hours and give her to opportunity. If there is a favorite spot to go that is not a walk to get to, go there first. Offer her half her normal amount of food tonight and don't be too worried if she doesn't eat.
