My dog's spay stitch is poking out and has a seroma. Is this normal?

Nani may have had a small stitch abscess at that spot. That can sometimes happen at either end of the incision where the knots are tied. The best treatment is to remove that stitch and allow the small area to drain. This should heal by itself as long as Nani does not make it worse by chewing and biting at it. Keep the area clean and you can also apply a very thin layer of Neosporin to that spot once or twice a day for a few days.

From the pictures, it looks like skin irritation, and I don't think it's caused by something more serious such as from the spay. If Stella is chewing at the area, that certainly can be causing it to get worse. I am concerned about infection in that area, and she does need to see a vet to have this treated. I'd take her into a vet today or tomorrow. I hope this helps!

It takes several months for dissolvable sutures to fully break down. While this happens, it's not uncommon for a suture end to poke through the skin. Since Willow's incision has healed fully a month after surgery, it's perfectly fine to trim the end of suture that's sticking out. Obviously, take care not to accidentally cut Willow!

This is a pustule probably from a buried suture knot. The suture is absorbable but it takes several months to dissolve and sometimes the knot can cause irritation and a small infected pustule. I recommend taking Patti to your veterinarian and they can feel if there is suture left in the incision. It can be removed now that the incision is healed. Generally when the pustule is opened the knot is exposed and can be cut off and removed with suture scissors. Then the skin will be cleaned and it should heal up quickly once the knot is gone. This looks like a reaction to the stitches that were used under the skin from the spay surgery. There is a type of suture that your vet may have used that takes months and months to completely dissolve. That is my best guess as to what is going on. I don't think you need to rush her to an ER but I do think you need to get her an exam with your vet sometime in the next 24 hours. Try to keep her as calm and quiet as possible in the meantime. Watch it carefully, if it starts to look swollen she needs to see an ER vet.

Actually, it could be stitches, depending on what kind of material they used for that layer (we close abdominal incisions in 3 individual layers). Or it could be scar tissue. Either way, if it isn’t causing any issues, just let it be! :) If it seems to be causing discomfort or swelling, then it needs to be examined by a vet.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Minnie. The stitches are not very tight, but that can be to accommodate any swelling of the skin post-surgically. As long as she is prevented from licking the incision, it should be fine. If however, the stitches come out or the incision opens up, then she will need to see her veterinarian.
