Can any vet spay or neuter my pet, or is special training required?

There is no special qualification for a rabbit savvy vet, you just need to try and look for a veterinary clinic that treats rabbits, often you can find this service in exotic veterinary practices. male rabbit neutering is very simple and can be done by most vets, spaying of females is a little more complex and i would recommend having it done by a vet who is experienced in rabbit surgery.

Some Petco locations have a full-service veterinary clinic inside them which can do neuters (like a Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach clinic or Thrive vet clinic). Petco locations that use Vetco do not do surgery (neutering).

In some hospitals, especially at academic institutions, spays can be performed laparoscopically, meaning only a couple very small incisions are made in the abdominal wall. A thin camera is placed through one, and another instrument which can grasp/cauterize/cut tissue is inserted through the other. While these procedures are less invasive, the procedure itself takes much longer than a typical, "open" spay. Most spays can be performed in 15-30 minutes, thus minimizing anesthesia times. Laparoscopic spays tend to take 60-90 minutes. I hope this is helpful!

With any surgery there is always a risk of death. But in most animals spay or neuter is a relatively safe procedure. Some things can be done to make it safer. Discuss with your vet about doing preanesthetic bloodwork, having an IV catheter and IV fluids during the procedure. If a pet does die it may depend on the clinic if they have options for cremation or burial or have your take a body home. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In the US, spaying means removal of the ovaries and/or uterus which is an abdominal (belly) surgery. We do use an injection to put them under anesthesia. In your country there may be an injection that can sterilize her or prevent her from going in to heat (like birth control). I would ask your Vet to clarify if they are recommending a surgical procedure or medical management to prevent kittens. I hope this helps!

I am not sure if you are spaying your cat or if you vet it. I would recommend only have a vet who went through the proper schooling do the cat spay. Even though we consider spays routine they are intra-abdominal surgeries and have a risk associated with them. I would recommend having your vet decide what suture they want to use. The best suture will be one that the vet is familiar working with. hope that helps
