Puppy spay incision hard, swollen, pus in urine. Is vet advice right?

Poor girl. She does apear to be taking a while to heal. If pus is present, then that is the reason for the delay in healing. The infection is not being controlled well with the antibiotics chosen. Another stronger antibiotic is needed here, so discuss this with your veterinarian. I do also see some granulation tissue there which is when the skin is trying to heal and close the incision. The wound still looks pretty fresh though, even though its been 3 weeks now. Based on what I see in the photo and your description, hydrotherapy of the area may be needed at this point, possible reclosure of the area with additional staples once these are removed, and a different antibiotic. This looks like a reaction to the stitches that were used under the skin from the spay surgery. There is a type of suture that your vet may have used that takes months and months to completely dissolve. That is my best guess as to what is going on. I don't think you need to rush her to an ER but I do think you need to get her an exam with your vet sometime in the next 24 hours. Try to keep her as calm and quiet as possible in the meantime. Watch it carefully, if it starts to look swollen she needs to see an ER vet.

I cannot speak for your vet but Spays are sterile procedures. This means it is done in a sterile bacteria free area. Sometimes patients can have suture reactions or inflammation around the surgery site secondary to movement. Also sometimes mild discharge if clear in color is not actually a bacterial infection. The clear discharge can be just secondary to the inflammation and reaction. However at anytime if you see green/yellow discharge, heat around the incision, increase in patients temperature or the incision separating I would recommend taking Lexi back to the vet for possible antibiotics and a close exam of the incision. The fact that there is a hole now and pus is draining is actually good. All the dead cells from the infection need to be purged, and that is happening now. This should not take longer than three days, and then the hole should heal and the reddening should go away as well as the swelling. Should the the hole get much bigger, or the discharge turn greenish or smelly and the skin not lose the swelling and redness by Friday, I suggest you take Harley back to your vet on Friday. Make sure she cannot lick the incision as this introduces new bacteria and keeps it from healing.

It looks like there could be some inflammation at the site of the incision. That could be due to her body breaking down the sutures, or she caused some sort of trauma to the area. If she is acting normal and you don't feel any swelling around that area I would wait and see if it improves. But if there is swelling, drainage, or pain I would worry about a dehiscence (opening of the incision) which would be an emergency and she should see a vet immediately.

Hi, if Azumi is well in herself, I would recommend to prevent her from licking the area and have the wound reassessed in a couple of days. The swelling should gradually reduce over the course of time. If it should become harder and firmer or Azumi should be uncomfortable, I would recommend to have her checked over.

Hi there. I would try cleaning it with some mild soap and warm water. She may be having a reaction to the suture material. As long as their incision is still holding together, and Aisha is acting normally, just clean and keep a close eye on her.
