Is it safe to spay my dog after a healed vaginal prolapse?

Yes, it is absolutely fine to spay your dog, and I applaud you for wanting to do it! She's humping because it feels good, not because she is necessarily in heat again. I would have it done before she goes into heat :-)

Anesthesia and surgery is a bit riskier for geriatric dogs and cats but as long as blood work was done, safe anesthesia and monitoring equipment is used she should do well. Yes, it is most likely mammary (breast) cancer. Very common to happen in dogs that are not spayed. That is why we recommended spaying dogs early in life. 1. I suggest you find a vet that will do both surgeries at once. There is no sense in doing two surgeries a month apart. They can both be done safely at the same time in most cases. She may be one of those cases that the mass is extensive and that is why your vet does not want to do them at the same time. I don't know since I have not examined her myself but in most cases I would do both surgeries together. Just my opinion. 2. You need to get her spayed, even at 8 years old. If you don't, then she may end up with more mammary tumors or a pyometra or she may pass away. Yes, a blood test before the spay is indicated absolutely. 3. It should not change her much. If you don't do it then she can certainly die just like a person with breast cancer so you really have no option but to have it done. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I highly recommend it! It prevents Aaylah from getting a pyometra later in life. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. It doesn't happen to every intact dog, but the chance is there, and it costs thousands to treat. I'd have her spayed as soon as possible, before her next heat. I hope this helps!

I would not recommend giving her anything to stop the heat, in dogs it's usually a potentially harmful hormonal treatment that is known of causing cancer. you should wait at least 2 months after her heat cycle before you can have her spayed, .

It would be better to wait until after the heat as during the pre-estrus and heat the uterus is very well vascularized and the extra amount of female hormones increase bleeding. So in order too minimize the surgical risk it is better to have her spayed during anestrus, ie when not cycling.

There isn't an increased surgery risk because Tohru will be out of heat, plus one heat isn't as concerning. I'd be more concerned about an older dog that has had multiple heats as well as puppies. The most important thing is to make sure she doesn't get pregnant.
