My pitbull has a sore on his back. What home care can I provide?

From the excellent picture you have provided it looks like Winstyn may have moist dermatitis, or a "hot spot". Unfortunately, hot spots often require a trip to the vet for clipping of the area, cleaning, and prescription of a healing spray / ointment with antibiotics and a steroid. All of these interventions will help the area heal quickly, and minimise the level of discomfort that Winstyn has to experience. Due to the location of the sore it will particularly difficult to treat at home. In the meantime you can help Winstyn by; Placing a an e-collar to prevent him biting or attracting at the sore and making it worse Attempt to air out the area as much as possible to help it dry out. This is key to healing. Do not attempt any medications at home as they can cause pain and in some cases delay healing. I hope this is a helpful answer and that Winstyn feels better soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If at all possible I recommend a vet visit to see if this wound could be closed. Suturing it closed may allow much faster healing than leaving it open. Otherwise be sure to keep it clean and dry. You can use an antiseptic like betadine or chlorhexidine once to clean it. Be sure to dilute cleaner then rinse well. Use just today or if the wound gets extremely dirty. Using daily can actually slow healing. Keep the area clean and dry. I recommend Ares stay primarily indoors until it is closed as he could get a maggot infestation of flies lay eggs on the wound. Using hydrotherapy or gentle water from a hose is a good way to keep it clean. If there is swelling, discharge or pain, Ares needs to see a vet for medications. I hope he heals quickly.

I recommend cleaning the wound with antibacterial soap, rinsing it well and then applying a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. This looks fairly superficial so with keeping it cleaned and treated daily this should heal fine. If you keep Ginny outside please use a dog flea and insect repellent on her to prevent flies and knots from getting into the wound. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and she will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

The first picture looks like a large series of insect bites all in one location. If Jackson has been sticking his head in any weird areas where something like that could happen, that would be a reasonable guess as to the cause of the lesions. Determining with certainty the cause of the rash is not easy without significant diagnostic testing including skin scrapings and cytology at minimum. I think that the swelling and the affected area still look bad enough that Jackson could probably benefit from a systemic antibiotic to address the skin, as well as a topical ointment with both antimicrobial / anti-inflammatory properties to help with the swelling and redness. If the area has been itchy even a little bit, Jackson should be wearing an e-collar to prevent any further damage (and as a result delayed healing) to the area in question. As far as things she can do at home if the vet is not an option, use of betadine and a over the counter steroidal cream would both be beneficial. You can obtain an e-collar through your vet or a pet store, or you can even make a home made one ( there are lots of videos available on YouTube on how best to do this). Hope this helps!

Poor guy. If the areas are relatively superficial, then you can clean them with Betadine/Iodine diluted 50:50 with warm water OR Chlorhexidine solution (2-4% diluted until a robin's egg blue consistency). This will remove any bacteria on the surface. However, since this part of the pet is always touching the ground and getting debris in them, you should consider placing booties (purchased at the local Petco or on Amazon) on Lincoln for 4-7 days until the skin starts to heal back. You may not need to keep these on Lincoln while he is inside the house, but definitely when he goes outside to potty. Alternatively, you can try placing socks or some kind of stocking material on his paws and then wiping them down with the solution when he comes back in. I would not recommend placing anything else over the counter on these areas. The paw pads are normally very forgiving when they just have abrasions on them and not an actual laceration (cut) of the pad, and heal up well in many cases. If the paws are wore down to the point of bleeding or show any signs of infection, then it is best to take him to your veterinarian for additional medication and treatment. I hope that this helps.
