My dog has a sudden soft, squishy lump on his head. Is it a bug bite?

So, yes, you should take him to your vet for an exam. It is not an emergency; just try to get him an appointment in the next week or so. Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Drake! This lump could be from a bug bite, but it could also be a benign tumor of some sorts like a wart, or it could be a cyst. I would keep an eye on this lump for now. As long as it doesn't get bigger over the days leading up to his appointment on the 28th, it doesn't appear to bother him, there are no behavioral or appetite changes during this time, and/or you don't see any redness, warmth to the touch, or pus from the lump, it's fine to wait until he has his vaccine appointment. Should you observe any of the signs that I mentioned above, then I would take him into the vet sooner. Don't let him scratch at it, as that could make it worse. If he does start scratching at it, making it bleed, then it's bothering him and have him seen by a vet sooner. Good luck, I hope this helps!

If it doesn't seem to bother Gracie, then I would recommend monitoring it for now to see if this resolves on its own within the next few days. You can apply a cold compress on the area (if needed) for 5-10 minutes to help with some of the swelling, and a very thin layer of Neosporin once every 12 hrs as needed; however, this is likely to resolve on its own as long as Gracie doesn't bother it and it doesn't spread. If the bump does appear to get worse over the next 24-48 hrs, then its best to get Gracie seen by your vet for stronger medication to get this to resolve. There is a slight chance that this is an infected pocket (abscess) that will require a short course of antibiotics and treatment to get this to heal well. Has he been licking at it? Can you identify a wound on it? It may be an abscess (localized infection) under the skin, as thise can show up very quickly. You can shave the hair over the top and clean it with dilute Betadine (available at any pharmacy - use water to dilute it so it looks like tea). Put an ecollar (cone) on him to prevent him from biting or chewing on it, and make an appointment with your vet as soon as you can—but it’s not something you need to see an emergency vet for as long as it’s not seeming painful and he’s eating and acting normally. Other possible causes would be some type of tumor (though less likely with his age), or a fluid accumulation called a seroma. Your vet may Do a fine needle aspirate (poke the bump with a needle and then look at cells under the microscope) to see what it is and then know how best to treat it. A bump can be any number of things from an insect bite to infection/abscess, cyst or adnormal growth. If it is growing rapidly, is painful or changes in color or size quickly I would have Skookum checked by a vet.

How awful for you that Buds ran off but I'm glad he came back! There are a couple of things this bump could be on his head. He could have injured himself, he could have an abscess, an insect bite, or he could have a cyst. Given that the bump has down with the ice pack and he is acting his normal self, I would continue to ice the bump for five minutes at a time a couple of times a day for the next two to three days. Should the bump go away completely, you can stop icing it. If the bump doesn't go away, gets larger, he has behavior changes such as lethargy and anorexia, and/or he shows other symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, then I would take him into a vet to have him examined. Insect bites don't typically cause fluid filled areas like this. I am concerned this area may be edema (fluid filled sac) or even emphysema (air filled sac). This area needs to be investigated by your vet to determine the underlying cause. I hope that Max's mysterious swelling resolves soon! Best wishes and take care.
