My dog smells bad after baths. Is baking soda safe for odor?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach! Making your own shampoo May be difficult. Baking soda will not cause kidney failure but using improper ratios of ingredients could harm the skin. I would lean towards getting a shampoo such as Duoxo Calm for a maintenance shampoo. This particular shampoo will help strengthen the skin to keep it well hydrated and to prevent dandruff and itching secondary to dry skin. I would recommend they have a thorough physical with a veterinarian to determine if there is an underlying issue contributing to the odor, and get any suggestions on a shampoo that may help. It's likely Sahara has either a bacterial infection, a yeast infection or severe allergies. Less frequently, an underlying endocrine disease may also be the root cause. When bad odors won't go away with a bath, it generally indicates a problem. I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian so that she can have the correct diagnosis and receive appropriate treatment. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the itching and odor should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Sahara wear an elizabethan collar at all times. One of the most common reasons that dogs will produce a "doggy odor" quickly right after a bath is if they have an overgrowth of a normal yeast on their skin called malessezia. This is more common in dogs that have skin problems or allergies, but is very common in mastiffs. Often, the first place you start to notice the smell is the face because yeast loves the moisture of the eyes and mouth, so it will often start to overgrow there first. There are a number of prescriptions antifungal shampoos that you could use as well as wipes that you can use for the face. Lucy could be smelling because she has a skin infection caused by yeast. My recommendation would be to have her seen by a vet. If she does have a skin infection, the vet can prescribe medication to clear it up so you can bring her inside. It's great that you are bringing her inside so she doesn't get heat stroke!

Dogs don't sweat through their skin, only their paw pads - so if Mollie has a persistent odor, this is likely due to some other problem such as a bacterial or fungal skin infection, impacted anal glands, an ear infection, or some other issue. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam to determine what is causing the odor. He/she should be able to prescribe a medicated shampoo or other treatment for the underlying problem, depending on what is found.
