My dog slipped on ice after TPLO surgery. Why won't he use his leg?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 4 years and 3 months old | 110 lbs

Our dog had TPLO surgery a little over three weeks ago. He had his 2 week f/u appointment 2 thursdays ago and they said he was doing fine. Last Monday we had some ice and slippery sidewalks and he slipped a little when walking to the park to use the bathroom. Since then, he has been essentially totally non weight-bearing on the surgery leg. He will use it while walking but lifts it up and barely uses it at all. He was previously making great progress so we are confused what happened.

Poor Leo! TPLO surgery requires at least eight to 12 weeks before full recovery, and exercise restriction is a very important part of the recovery. The concern I have is that Leo slipping on the ice may have interrupted the healing process in the surgical area, and that is causing him to be non weight-bearing on that leg. I would take him into the backyard only to go to the bathroom, and get him into the vet on Monday. Likely x-rays will need to be done again to check how the surgical site is healing, and the vet can discuss with you the next steps for him. That may include strict cage rest, or in severe cases another surgery to fix any damage done to the surgical site from the slip. Keep him as quiet as possible until you are able to see your vet again. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Obviously she is in pain if she is limping more, and given that it looks like her knee wings outward when she walks, I would make an appointment with the vet for tomorrow morning to have her seen. It can take up to eight weeks or longer to fully heal from a TPLO, and she had surgery about three weeks ago. Being knocked down could be enough to disturb the healing process and potentially disrupt the plates in her joints. She likely needs an x-ray to make sure everything is ok, but it's not an emergency. Rest her tonight, do not take her for a walk. Only take her into your yard to potty on a leash, and bring her right back in when she's done. Have her seen by the vet who did the surgery tomorrow. Why is my dog's TPLO recovery so much slower than a person's?

I believe the main difference is that dogs don't understand that they just had surgery. You can't explain to a dog that they need to take it easy, and if their pain is well managed (which is hopefully always the case) they will try to use a leg normally. A TPLO involves cutting the bone and then placing a plate, and a young exuberant dog can easily bend a plate or cause screws to back out of the bone running in the yard for a couple of minutes. Some surgeons will have owners do some physical therapy soon after surgery, but these are usually non-weight bearing passive range of motion type exercises.

My dog twisted leg after CCL surgery; can't bear weight. What's wrong?

It probably just sprained it. It is not uncommon for dogs to do very well post-op and then have a bit of a set back. You didn't mention which type of surgery he had to correct his CCL tear. Did they put in a false ligament? Was a TTA done? Was the meniscus involved? All of that can play a factor on what may be going on. I suggest you just rest him very strictly and ice the knee for 10 minutes 3-4 times per day (both the outer and inner portions of the knee). Continue all the medications that your vet has prescribed. If not much improvement after ~7 days of this I suggest you get a referral from your vet to an orthopedic surgeon for a second opinion. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

My dog had TPLO surgery. Why is she limping on the repaired leg?

This could be just a flareup of arthritis in the knee which is very common in dogs with the surgery. Depending on what was done sometimes there could be a meniscus injury after the surgery. Some surgeons do a "preventative" meniscus surgery at the same time others do not. Rarely it could indicate an issue with the implant placed during the procedure. I would follow your veterinarian's advice and if she becomes worse have her seen sooner. Sometimes x-rays of the knee or needed other times we can figure out what's going on with just an orthopedic exam.

What are the stages of dog recovery after broken leg surgery?

The dog should be kept as quiet as possible for 6-12 weeks to ensure that the bone sets and heals properly. This means no running, jumping, or playing, and the dog should be taken out to toilet on a lead only. Once x-rays are done to confirm that the bone has fully healed, the dog will be allowed to exercise and activity levels must be built back up slowly. Physical therapy and hydrotherapy may be done to help the dog regain it's muscle mass and activity levels.

My dog broke his leg. Why isn't he walking on it after 11 days?

I’m sorry to hear about Teddy! Yes it can take a while for animals to bear weight on the broken leg. This is especially true of the small breeds who so easily get around on 3 legs. If it’s been 14 days and Teddy still isn’t putting ANY weight on the foot, please go see your vet to make sure things are ok. Also definitely give any pain medication you’ve been given. My dog is limping after a walk. What could be wrong with his paw?

Poor Leo! He could have injured his paw on the walk causing the limping. I recommend resting Leo for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I hope this helps!
